A Smile to Remember

This is it. I, Hyuuga Hinata, am now officially entering high school in Konoha High, I said in mind as I was standing three steps inside from Konoha High gate. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath to feel the new air and atmosphere. Then, suddenly a small bump on my right shoulder surprised me and made me open my eyes.
"Gomen!", said the guy with blonde-spiky hair and smiled sheepishly at me as he kept on running towards the main building.
"It's okay…", I said to him who already ran so far that I was sure he couldn't hear me. Such a cute smile, I thought as I continued to walk towards the board to see which class I was in.
1-C, that's my class. And my homeroom teacher is… Mitarashi Anko sensei. Well, I was glad my homeroom teacher was a woman, because I was not really good at socializing with the opposite gender. I walked straight into my classroom and there were already full of people whom I guess were my classmates. I sat on wherever the desk was available. To be exact, I sat on the front desk, in the second row. Five minutes later, a teacher walked in the class that I was sure that she was Mitarashi sensei.
"Alright, kids! Sit down! As most of you have already known me, I'm Mitarashi Anko. From now on, I will be your homeroom teacher. Yorosh—"
"Anko-chaaaaann!", a boy which happened to be one of my classmates screamed and waved cheerfully at Mitarashi sensei.
"Shut up, you little punk! How many times do I have to tell you to call me sensei?", she sighed.
Well, it wasn't so surprised that some of my classmates already knew each other and even they knew the teachers since they were from Konoha middle school, most of them. As I am, I was always home-schooling until middle school. Have I already told you about my family background? Well, I was born in a very rich family which runs the Hyuuga company from generation to generation. It was one of the most famous technology company in this fire country. My father said that I didn't need to go to public school, because the professional tutor would teach me privately, at home. That's why I didn't have a single friend until now, except Hanabi, my little sister, and Neji, my cousin. My cousin went to public school, though. Hanabi, just like me, didn't go to public school. So, everytime he got back from school, Hanabi and I would go to his room and asked how his day at school was. He, sometimes, showed me pictures of his friends in school and I always wanted to wear the uniform because it was so cute. Well, weeks ago I cried to my mother that I wanted to go to public school, so did Hanabi. My mother and Hanabi are the only one I can express my feelings with. As my father, he expects his daughters to behave as a noble family, so, you know. And for Neji-nii-san, well, I looked up to him as he is good at anything. He's born a genius. He's already like my own brother, which he is, but from different parents. His father is my father's twin little brother. He is now living in another country with his wife to run the Hyuuga company's branch in there, but I still don't know why Neji-nii-san chose to stay here instead of following his parents. Well, my father loved my mother too much that he accepted my mother's plea to let me and Hanabi go to public school. So here I am, ready to make friends, which I'm not good at. Oh, and Hanabi is a middle school freshman, so, yeah, she's in the middle school section.
"Okay, that's enough for today's homeroom. You can go to the aula right now for the student council wants to greet you, freshmen! Mata ne~!", said Mitarashi sensei who brought me back to reality from day-dreaming, because I was too happy. Well, that's because I thought going to public school was too good to be true. Everyone started to walk out the class and went to aula as told. I followed them in silence.
"Hey! You must be new", said a girl from behind as she poked my right shoulder. I turned to look at her. A blonde girl showed up and currently walked beside me. She was a little taller than me. Wow, she's gorgeous, was my first impression of her.
"I'm Ino, Yamanaka Ino, the girl who sat right behind you. You didn't seem to notice, though", she laughed. What an easy-going girl,I smiled.
"I'm Hinata. I'm sorry. I was too nervous, because today's my first day of school, Yamanaka-san", well, I kind of don't want to introduce myself with my family name. As you know, I want to make friends, the real ones.
"No, no. don't call me that. Sheesh! Just call me Ino, Hinata!", she said as she put her left arm on my shoulder.
We arrived at the aula which is already full of students. A few minutes later, some students appeared on the stage who happened to be the student council. There were 5 of them and they were all junior students. And I was so shocked that one of the students standing on the stage was…was Neji-nii-san!
"Neji-nii-sa—"
"This school is famous with handsome guys, you know. You might want to get a boyfriend from this school sooner or later", Ino laughed. She didn't seem to know that I was so shocked that I didn't really understand what she just said.
"Oh, that guy? He's the student council president. He's popular, too. But it's a pity if you set an eye on him. He has girlfriend, you know", said Ino pointing at Neji. Guess I was wrong when I thought she didn't seem to notice my shocked expression.
"Oh, no. he's my— wait, WHAT?!", I was so shocked that I screamed, a little, enough to make some of students around me looked at me strangely. Well, Neji-nii-san never told me about him having a girlfriend, so I kind of carried away when I know he had one.
"Whoa, slow down there, sweetheart. There are still so many popular guys around here that haven't been taken yet, you know. But, please, don't take that guy over there. His name is Sai and he's mine. I've already set an eye on him since he was still a freshman", said Ino pointing at the other guy on the stage standing beside Neji. He's a pale looking guy with black hair and black emotionless eyes. He's cool, but he kinda freak me out. What's with that expressionless face.
"No, Ino. Neji is my cousin. Well, I was a bit surprised that he has a girlfriend since he never told me anything about that.", I explained. "So, who's the girl?", I asked curiously.
"Holy cow! You were a Hyuuga?! Oh, forgive my rudeness, Hinata-sama", she bowed, but more like, she did that for a joke.
"Well, you are forgiven, then", I responded her joke. "But, please, don't call me that. I don't want you to see me as a Hyuuga, I want you to see me as Hinata, because you are my very first friend, Ino", I pleaded.
"Sure thing. I never intended to call you that, though", she laughed again then pointed a girl on the stage who is now giving a speech, "She's the one, Tenten-san, Neji senpai's girlfriend". I immediately saw the girl Ino was pointing at. So, she's Neji-nii-san's girlfriend. She reminds me of…a panda, I guess. Well, she's cute, but I can tell from her appearance that she's a tomboy.
A few minutes the speech was given by the student council, but I didn't really listen to it, since Ino would talk all the time telling me about anything she knew about this school. I also told her about me home-schooling and my daily life at Hyuuga mansion. I'm glad I made a friend.
After 45 minutes speech, the students were dismissed, back to the class. Before going to class, I excused myself to Ino to go to the bathroom. She said okay and would be waiting for me in the class. I washed my face as I heard a familiar voice from outside the building. Well, it was loud enough to make me, from the second floor, hear the voice. I peeked out from the window in the bathroom to clarify this familiar voice. Ah, it's the guy from before, I thought as I saw a blonde spiky-haired guy with a girl, a beautiful pink-haired girl.
"So, Sakura-chan, will you be my girlfriend?", said the blonde guy.
Oh my God! This is a confession! This is the first time I saw a confession. I only knew it from manga and I never actually saw one. Oh my God, Hinata, this is so rude of you. You have to go! But I was too curious to go. Oh, no! what should I do?!
"I'm sorry, Naruto. I'm in love with someone else", the voice of the girl brought me to reality and I continued to saw them from above.
Silent.
"Well, it's okay, Sakura-chan. As long as you still want to be my friend, that is", he grinned sheepishly as he put both of his hands behind his head.
"Of course, Naruto. Thank you", she, then, left.
After the girl dissapeared, he put down his hands and sighed. I was still looking at him while he kicked some random stones around his feet with an obvious expression said that he was broken-hearted, dissapointedly broken-hearted.
A few minutes after observing him broken-hearted, the bell rang. I went to the class with no further thought.
As if time went too fast, my first day of school was over. I just couldn't wait for tomorrow, for my second day of school. Today was fun. Many things happened today. I got a new friend, I witnessed a confession, and more importantly, I learned that Neji-nii-san's got a girlfriend!
I was standing in front of the gate, waiting for my sister. My cousin always came home late, though. Now I know why he was always so late, student council thing, I guess.
"Oy, Hinata! What are you doing here?", Ino screamed while running towards me. She hasn't gone home yet, because she said she wanted to apply for cheerleader club.
"Ah, Ino. I'm waiting for my sister", I smiled at her who's already beside me.
"Souka? I'm going first, then. Mata ashita ne, Hinata!", she waved while running, again. Is she in a hurry? I just waved her back.
"Onee-san! Did you wait for long?", Hanabi suddenly appeared and grabbed my hand.
"No", I smiled. "Let's go!", I led her home. My house is not too far from school, so I refused my father's idea to go to or to be picked up at school by car. On the way home, Hanabi and I were telling each other how our first day of school were. It seemed like Hanabi enjoyed the school, too. And as I thought, she was surprised when I told her about Neji having a girlfriend. I laughed.
"Okaerinasai, my pretty little girls. How was school?", said my mother as soon as we got home. We went to her and hugged her with all our might. Oh, how much I love her.
"Tadaima, Okaa-san", I whispered while hugging her.
After we parted each other, Hanabi started to tell everything happened in the school excitedly while I excused myself to go to my room to clean myself. After taking a bath, I threw myself on the bed. A little rest before interrogating Neji-nii-san, I laughed a little before closing my eyes.
1 hour later...
"Onee-san, wake up! Neji-nii-san's home", I heard Hanabi's voice and I felt her poking my cheek over and over until I woke up. I don't know why, but she always did that to wake me up.
As soon as I woke up, we ran to Neji-nii-san's room, sitting on his bed, waiting for him to come out from the bathroom, and ready to interrogate him.
Click. I heard a door opened.
"Gah! Will you two stop entering my room without permission? What if I didn't wear any clothes on?", he was surprised. Sighed while drying his wet hair, "Okay. What is it?".
"I heard you've got yourself a girlfriend", said Hanabi bluntly.
"And she's cute, too", I said before he could even respond. I smirked. His face was so priceless that I wanted to take a photo of it, but sadly I didn't bring my phone. He had a little blush on his face. He was shocked, of course. I gotta thank Tenten-san for making this-so-prideful-Neji made that kind of face. A few second later, he tried to calm himself and said, "How did you know?"
"Let's just say a pretty bird told me. And I see you're the student council president", I said while crossing my hands in front. Now it's Hanabi's turn to surprise, "Holy cow! Neji, you're a president?!". Neji glared at Hanabi hearing the way she spoke and shouted his name. Sometimes, Hanabi can be a little..wild.
"Yeah. It's not a big deal", he admitted.
A few hour passed as Neji told us about how and when he got a girlfriend and how he could be the president of the student council. After listening to the story, I found that student council seemed interesting, I think.
"You have your own school life now, why do you keep bothering Neji?", a voice came from the door. It was my mother. "Dinner's ready", she continued. Neji only smiled and bowed a little to her as we walked outside Neji's room following my mother.
"Ano ne, Okaa-san. Neji-nii-san's got a girlfriend", she said excitedly while running towards my mother. Neji coughed in surprise.
"Hontou, Neji? You should bring her here", said my mother excitedly but in a calm way looking back at Neji who was embarassed. "Hai", was his only response. I can only giggle seeing this side of Neji.
A night has passed, I was ready to start my second day of school life. Neji and I were waiting for Hanabi. Well, because she was used to home-school, her habit of waking up late couldn't really change. Five minutes later, she was ready and the three of us went straight to the school.
"So, see you later guys", Hanabi parted to go to middle school section. Neji and I also parted because freshman and junior students were in different building.
"Ohayou gozaimasu, Ino", I greeted her as soon as I sat down.
"Oh, ohayou, Hinata", she replied, spiritlessly.
"What's wrong? You don't seem in a good mood", I looked at her in concern.
"Sai senpai was just confessed…again", she sighed.
"Oh my God! This early in the morning?", I asked surprisedly. Is he that popular that this early in the morning he already got confessed by?, I thought. Ino just nodded.
"Did he say yes?", I asked her carefully, afraid that she would say yes which made her more miserable.
"I don't know. I was in the bathroom when I heard the conversation, but I left before Sai senpai answered. I'm afraid, you know", she sighed. Bathroom? Then it took place on the same spot as that cute-smile guy confessed to, right? Is that spot a place for this kind of thing?, I thought again.
"Well, you should also make your move, Ino. Be confident! You're gorgeous", I comforted her. Yeah, right. Even though I said so, I was pretty much not really the confident type.
Ino suddenly snapped. "You're right! Hell yeah, I'm gorgeous! Thanks, Hinata. I gotta confess now", she stood up and was ready to go, but I grabbed her hand and stopped her.
"Okay, kids! Class is started", said Mitarashi sensei as she entered the class. Ino, knowing the reason I stopped her, felt embarassed and sat back on her chair.
"After school, okay?", I whispered to her and she just nodded.
A few hours later, it was time for lunch break. Ino, a guy named Shikamaru also from our class, and I were eating at the food court. Shikamaru is Ino's close friend since they were still in middle school. Ino sighed looking at her food. Her mood was down again, because she and I just searched Sai senpai in junior students building, but he was nowhere to be found.
"Maybe he's at the infirmary, you know. He looked kind of pale…everyday, though", said Shikamaru who was sitting in front of Ino. I agree with the pale part, but I don't think he's pale, because he's sick, though.
"What's up, guys?", a loud familiar voice came not far from our place. The three of us looked at the source of that loud voice. It was that guy again, the guy with a cute smile, I felt my face hot a little.
"Mind if I join?", he asked while sitting in front of me, not really waiting for an answer.
"Well, if it isn't the loudest student. It's not like you to be alone, Naruto. You usually cling onto Sakura like every damn second", said Ino not bothering to look at him again. I glanced at him to see his response. Well, it's because I know he's been rejected by that Sakura girl. He smiled, not really a sincere one, though.
"Yeah, I've been rejected", he said, mostly like whispering.
"Well, it's even more not like you to be this cheerless. You already know that she likes your best friend, yet you keep clinging on to her", said Ino feeling a little sorry for him.
"Well, I can hope, can't I?", he said while slurping his ramen.
"Don't worry, being rejected means that you gotta move on and find for the better one. Pretty girls are everywhere, me, for example. But, I'm sorry, my heart has already been taken. Oh, this girl beside me is also gorgeous, you know", Ino said cheerfully.
"Ino—"
"Gosh, Ino. You called Naruto the loudest student yet you're just as loud as him", said Shikamaru before I could finish my words. I feel the guy in front of me was now giving his attention to me, for the first time since a while ago.
"Well, it's better that I'm not lazy-ass like you, Shika", said Ino, bluntly as always.
"I thought I told you you shouln't call me th—"
"Besides, don't you have to meet your senior girlfriend? I'm sure she's ready to kick your lazy-ass by now", she added.
"Shit!", he cursed without a sound. Then he left running towards the senior students building. Well, this wass the first time I saw this side of him. In class, he never actually talked, so I thought he was a quiet student who never cared for anything. Well, I guess girls changed boys, I thought while thinking of Neji-nii-san.
"His girlfriend is a senior?", I asked Ino.
"Now I remember you. You were that lilac girl from the gate", the guy in front of me suddenly spoke after a few second observing me –well, I could feel it- before Ino could answer my question.
"Lilac?", my attention was now at him.
"Yeah, that day when I bumped into you, you smelled like lilac", he grinned. Ah, not that cute smile again.
"Ah, y-yes", I looked down at my half-eaten food, not daring to look at him in the eye.
"I see you already know each other", said Ino all of sudden. "Well, it's a good thing th— Holy cat! That's Sai. Sorry, gotta go, my friends", she disappeared in a second. She ran towards that pale guy who just arrived at the food court with Neji-nii-san and the the other guy from the student council whom I don't don't know the name.
"Well, as loud as she is", said the blonde guy in front of me. I giggled.
"Well again, name's Naruto, the loudest freshman from class B. what is the name of this pretty lady in front of me, if I might ask?", he said acting all high and mighty offering his hand. I giggled, again.
"Name's Hinata, Naruto-kun", I smiled and took his hand to shake hands.
"I see you're a freshman too and in the same class as Ino. Am I right?", he asked while slurping his ramen again. I just nodded in response.
Suddenly, the bell rang.
"It's nice to meet you, Hinata. I hope we can be good friends. See ya!", he stood up and went. I smiled in reply, I hope so, too, Naruto-kun.
