L had known it was coming. That was the worst part of it. He could…he could almost hear it. A slow, dragging something that had been gaining on him ever since he took up the Kira case. Now, in this gray morning, he felt it. It was looming just behind him, eternally patient.
It followed him through the building, away from the rooms where he had spent the past years tracking the killer, who always sat only feet away. It followed him up the stairs; up every flight, tireless. When he went out to the roof, it followed him there too. In the rain, he and it stood together and felt the chill.
He had a headache. There was this sound… It hummed against his temples like a melodious hammer; beautiful and relentless. Like bells. Even the sound of the rain was drowned out by it.

That was alright. It hadn't been an unpleasant sound, after all. The only thing that really bothered him though… this feeling of defeat. It couldn't be shaken. Was this going to be the last thing in his mind?

In the end, when the looming thing had finally descended, it wasn't a sense of failure or anger that Yagami's leering face brought him… Instead, that sound vanished, and he felt victorious. He felt warm.

Light…All this time, I was right. Everything I did was right.
Can I thank you for the expression on your face, even now?
