"I had a date," Steve murmured. He stared down at his shoes, overwhelmed.

Director Fury nodded and simply said, "We're aware." Steve was about to ask how, but he figured that was a stupid question. He looked up at the taller man before him. "So, what happened to her? To Peggy?" Her name came out quieter, with more emotion than he had intended. The director whipped his head up at him. Then he sighed.

"I suppose I have to tell you. But I don't think you're gonna like it."

"With all due respect, sir, I've heard a lot and seen a lot. I think I can handle it," the captain stated.

"Of course. Let's step inside." Director Fury walked briskly from the busy streets with Steve trailing behind. Once they were back inside the large, undercover S.H.I.E.L.D. building, they sat in a small office. Fury picked up a file and sifted through it. He made a satisfied noise and pulled out some papers that were held together by a paper clip.

"Here it is. I'm sorry if you don't like what you see there. But it is what it is," the other man said.

It was too late for sentiment though.
