Mist breathed frozen air on her kit's icy pelt. Frost had said they would leave at nightfall. Mist glanced out the den's entrance. The warm sun hurt her eyes and toes. They still had plenty of time. Mist rested her head on her kit's back. She wished she could fall asleep as easily as the little fur-ball. Web fell asleep almost as soon as she plopped down. The poor kit couldn't take much more traveling. Web rolled onto her side and murmured in her sleep. Mist nosed her kit gently, then licked her ear-tips. She raised her head and looked out at her clan. They were all asleep- including Breeze, who had offered to take the first day shift. Mist roused herself and slid out from underneath Web. As she padded across the den, she glanced back and smiled. Where she had stepped, little circles of ice had sprouted up. It was good to be a Frost Cat.
Mist brushed Breeze's nose with her tail. Breeze snorted.
" Wha-? Oh! Oh! I'm awake, really."
Mist laughed softly.
" I'm sure. Why don't you head back to your nest. I'll take over." Breeze looked embarrassed.
" Okay... sorry."
Mist shook her head.
" It's fine. Just rest."
Breeze headed back to her nest and Mist took up watch. She gazed up at the sun. It shone down very brightly. The Frost cats slept during the day and traveled at night in order to avoid the sun's rays. Mist remembered how much Storm complained about that. He loved the sun. Most nights he would keep her up late so she could watch the sun rise with him. When Mist kitted, he started planning trips he would take the kits on so they could watch the sun rise and set. He never got to. He was killed in a Thaw attack before either could walk. Web's brother was killed in the same attack while Mist was trying to help Storm. It was unusual for a Thaw to kill a kit, but it wasn't hard at all. Cloud didn't stand a chance.
Mist felt herself crying as she thought about the attack. Storm had been so brave. He gave the Thaw a good scar across its wolf-muzzle. Mist glanced back at her clan. Breeze's shift would end soon and Mist could head back to her nest. She still didn't feel tired, but she needed some sleep so she could keep traveling when night came. Mist sighed and looked down. She dragged her claw through the dirt. She made a swirl. Little white flakes bloomed up and filled her design. Mist flopped on the ground. She was beginning to understand why Breeze fell asleep. Keeping watch was boring! She would never admit it though. Guarding the clan was a sacred duty, performed by only the most trusted.
Mist glanced back at the sleeping cats. She figured Breeze's shift was over. Who was it that Frost had said would take over? It must have been Shard. Mist picked herself up and headed toward Shard's slumbering form. Pounding at the den's entrance made her freeze. Her silvery fur began raising along her spine and neck. Mist whipped around. Through the opening she could see several large black noses snuffling around. One of the noses raised up out of sight and Mist heard a bark. Suddenly, the den's entrance was
over-flowing with huge gray-and-brown paws scrabbling to dig through the ice. The roof of the den began to shake. Mist raised her head and let out a yowl.
" Thaws!"
Hey! I'm really not that sure about this storyline, so I'll only continue it if I get a lot of good reviews. Plz tell me what you think!
