A/N: The world may be coming to an end. I wrote het fic. ;)
Actually, I have nothing against het. I just think slash is more fun to write. However, a friend of mine unleashed this plotbunny on me, so I had to write it.
No warnings, really. Only the vaguest of spoilers for the end of chapter 217 of the manga, IIRC. And it's not anything earthshattering.

For someone with an IQ of over 200, Shikamaru reflected, he really could be quite dumb sometimes. If he'd been thinking, he wouldn't have found himself in such a troublesome and awkward position. If he'd been thinking, he would've seen all the signs before it was too late.
If he'd been thinking, he would not be cloudwatching with Temari by his side, vocally expressing how silly she thought the concept was (of course, if she found it so silly, why did she stay?), while he surreptitiously tried to take her hand into his.
Looking back on it, Shikamaru thought, it was really quite obvious how he ended up here, tentatively wrapping his fingers around Temari's (while studiously looking at the clouds as if he had no idea what his hand was doing). And the worst part? It could have been completely avoidable.
For a moment, he feared he might get smacked upside the head with Temari's fan, which, as he found out, was made entirely with metal slats and weighed at least seventy pounds. However, the only response he received was a surprised pause in her tirade against such a useless hobby and her fingers loosely twining with his. He let out the breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding.
Yes, the whole thing could have been avoided, if he'd only been thinking. He would've noticed the way the bottom seemed to drop out of his stomach when he saw her; how he couldn't stop admiring her firm bottom as she walked past, no matter how stubbornly he tried not to; the fact that he couldn't quite look her in the eye without his mouth going dry.
He would've noticed the way his heart turned to mush when she'd first grinned at him right after dispatching Tayuya.
Without any warning, Temari reached out and turned his head so he was facing her. She was grinning the same grin which filled his stomach full of butterflies before she leaned in and kissed him thoroughly.
For the next few minutes, Shikamaru, who had an IQ of over 200, did not have a single coherent thought in his head (as evidenced by the surprised and somewhat goofy smile on his face). But when he could think again, he realized that, maybe, this situation wasn't as bothersome as he'd first thought.
And maybe he understood why his father would want to be around such a pushy woman.
Fin.
