Dreams

[Dedicated to Mars, the stars, the night, the music. And to the extreme isotope of hydrogen of atomic mass 2.]

[i] 'knowing'

The night was still. The faraway chirping of the crickets serenaded the darkness.

Tomoyo sat by the window, gazing into the midnight sky. Her chin rested gently on her hand, propped up against the window ledge. Her facial expression was calm and peaceful; her features clearly defined by shadows the soft moonlight cast, the corners of her sweet mouth upturned slightly in the faintest trace of a smile. The night was beautiful.

Behind her, the cord phone was off its hook; the earpiece disturbed from its usual position. Small red and yellow lights blinked continuously on the device, small hues of light that dissolved into shadows, ignored.

She knew. She knew that Syaoran was going to propose to Sakura tonight, at their favourite restaurant. He chose an excellent day.

The late night breeze carried the sweet smell of the blossoming night flowers from the gardens below. The sky was exceptionally clear, and the stars that hung suspended in a sea of blue black winked playfully at the beings on Earth. It was as though there was a celebration of some sorts, and the distant suns were showering their blessings on the blissful. The twin stars have begun to merge, their destinies intertwined, and it was a joyous beginning.

Her eyes, caught in the pale moonlight, betrayed her. The true, raw emotions practically overflowed. She also knew what Sakura's answer would be. Who wouldn't? She didn't want to hear; she didn't want to listen, because she didn't have to. She had always known.

/

But she liked to pretend. It hurt less.

The brightest light in the sky [besides the moon, it's practically a street lamp] was not a star, but a planet. Mars shone steadily, its glow a bloody red. The fiery planet did not come as close as tonight to the Earth in two hundred years or so, and it was the brightest a little past midnight. Tomoyo observed the crimson luminary fixedly; the night was like the tranquil surface of an undisturbed lake, unbroken. The colour red represented love and passion, but tonight it symbolized the bleeding in Tomoyo's heart, her grief painted scarlet.

The previously cold wind became warmer and warmer, the colour of the sky became lighter and lighter. The sun finally emerged from the dark depths of the horizon, bathing the city in a warm golden radiance.

Tomoyo rose abruptly from the armchair, with a swish of hair and skirt. She slammed the window shut with a resounding crack. She jerked fiercely at the string, and the blinds fell with a rush of sound. She spun away from the window and threw herself viciously onto her bed.

/

Persistent rays of light seeped in through the slits still, streaking the dark unlit room yellow.

Tomoyo, biting her lip, dove under her covers and hid.

Would like to know whether it seems as though I was rushing through the piece to finish it…

Inspired by Mars, what else?

I wrote it one-shot and kept editing. Hardly recognizable, but I realize my style is too straightforward and as simple as possible. To me, it defeats the purpose of trying to write the piece then. I seriously do hope that I will continue this… it's amusing that I only write when I have to study for exams. Things that stress do to you are amazing…

Thanks for reading!

Love & Peace
