Lost in the rainstorm, he didn't even hear her approach. Eventually he acknowledged her, voice soft and choked, barely audible over the pattering droplets.
When he declared he had failed, she laid a comforting hand on his drenched left forearm and insisted he hadn't.
When he pointed out that everyone thought so, she retorted she didn't.
Turning to study her loving gaze, he asked why; she answered that he already knew.
Pulling her close, he remarked that he didn't deserve her.
Agreeing with a smile, she reached up and kissed away the bitter tears of regret that nobody else saw.
