"This isn't go- going to work… is it?" The female spoke solemnly. Despite trying to stand up straight, and hold the last ounces of pride she had. Her words betrayed her nonchalant demeanor as she choked a bit in between words. She didn't want him to remember their last goodbye this way. With her broken and in tears. He didn't deserve that. The half-demon would live a lot longer than herself, and she wouldn't be the one to break his memories of them.

Her eyes found his own, just looking at his transparent figure beside the Gonshinboku tree, she saw his answer deep within his hues. He agreed… Though, he wasn't the type to say it. Or maybe he was just protecting her like he always did. This was hard for him, too.

Her hand was pressed flat, but firmly on the bark, this was what was what was keeping this conversation connected. Although, fate seemed to despise them, tearing them away from eachother, they managed to let the couple have a last goodbye.

It was after their long, treacherous journey had come to an end, that the schoolgirl found out that they weren't separated by time. But, by dimension. Demons didn't exist in her time, but in an alternate reality. Her duty was complete, the well didn't respond to her anymore, the magic faded, dust settled. It was over. They were over.

The pair told themselves they would speak everyday, despite who told them they couldn't. But after months, it was affirmative that the miko couldn't wait for something that was never coming, and the half demon couldn't talk to a tree each passing day. Relationships of any kind just didn't work without touch, feeling, or comfort. Words only helped so much. As much as it hurt, they both understood.

"Inuyasha, I want you to know I'll al—" The female stopped in mid sentence as his image faded away. Was this a joke? He was gone?

"Inuyasha?.."

"Inuyasha!"

Tears filled her once bright eyes as she slapped the tree a few times, as if knocking. Judging by the pain quickly filling her chest, she knew it well. He wasn't coming back. Sliding down to her knees, he wasn't there anymore to see her reaction; the teenager no longer had to worry about making him feel guilty. She cried.

The star-crossed lovers were no more. Fate cheated them with a goodbye.
