Shadows
An Eponine/Marius fanfiction – inspired by the song "On My Own"
-Where are you going, darling? – asked Cosette, half asleep.
-To the library, I can't sleep. I'll be back soon – he answered, kissing Cosette's forehead.
Tomorrow it will be the 15th anniversary of Eponine's death. He knows it too well, because he remembers every little detail of that miserable day. It's also been 15 years of bliss with Cosette, his beloved wife. She was and still is everything he had hoped and dreamed of.
Speaking of dreams…
He doesn't remember exactly when it all started. It was maybe two or three years into his marriage with Cosette. It all started in one of those nights when he had insomnia. That bloody insomnia….
He was in the library, reading, when she came. He realized someone had entered and thought it was Cosette. When he raised his eyes from the book, he saw her. Her eyes glistening.
He screamed and she laughed. –Do you want to wake everyone up? – she said.
They talked a little. She wanted to know how his life was, what had changed in France since she was gone. And then she said goodbye and when he turned, she was gone.
Until that other time when she came again. Her face was glowing like the moon and she looked so beautiful. He didn't remember her being that beautiful. Guess a man can be blind sometimes.
Then he would look forward to the nights of insomnia in the library. She didn't come regularly – sometimes she would come twice in a month, sometimes she wouldn't come for 3 or 4 months. He would go into quiet despair. But she always returned.
He doesn't remember when she kissed him for the first time. But she did. It tasted like the rain and her face was glowing and her eyes were glistening and she was so beautiful, he couldn't resist her.
One of those nights the kisses were more and more desperate and they ended up making love on the floor. He didn't know what happiness was until he was inside her. Kissing her, feeling her.
And there he was, waiting for her. He didn't know if she would come tonight…with her face glowing and the glint in her eyes. All he knew was that he would wait and wait until she came. He would wait for her, forever. He would wait for her, on his own….
The End
