The dead mother and her children
by Mashiro
Naruto fandom, one-shot, no spoilers
FAMILY: Mikoto x Sasuke x Itachi; sort of AU

In Sweden we celebrate Mother's Day on the last Sunday in May. But can you really write things like this for Mother's Day? I have no idea. I was inspired by a commercial with a kid lying on a counter in the kitchen drawing.

DISCLAIMER: I don't own Naruto, I'm just a fan. This is a FAN FICTION.

The dead mother and her children

Sasuke is lying on the counter on his stomach, feet kicking in the air. He's been there for half an hour now, deeply concentrated on his drawing.

I'm peeling potatoes. Later I will mash them and serve them together with fish. My husband isn't home yet but he will be soon. Same goes for my oldest. At least I hope so.

Now Sasuke looks up from the paper and waves it in the air.

"Look!"

I quickly wash my hands and dry them, then gently grab one of the corners and turn the paper my way.

"Oh…Yes, look at that… It's beautiful. Is it a dog?"

The child frowns and looks offended.

"Moom," he whines. "It's a house!"

"Ah! I'm sorry," I smile and he is satisfied, smiling again. "Is it our house?"

"Yeah!"

He's missing one of his teeth, one of the two in the middle. Lost it a week ago when he fell on the slide in the playground. It's affecting his speech, but he's proud. Now his grown-up tooth can come out whenever it wants.

Some moments after the front door opens and closes hard. Feet walk fast, steadily on the floor and soon he passes the entrance to the kitchen, on the way to his room. Not saying a word. Not looking at either of us.

"Niisan!" Sasuke shouts, smiling as wide as you can smile, the space in his row of teeth very noticeable. "Niisan, look! I made a house!"

But the steps don't slow and don't turn. The door to his room opens and closes, hard again. Sasuke turns to me and looks stunned beyond belief; surprised, as if this is the first time it happened. There's so much hope in that child that I could cry. But I smile instead and ruffle his hair.

"I'm sure he's just busy," I say. Sasuke closes his eyes, sniffles and blinks. Nods. Gets determined and starts drawing again. It's hard to say for sure but I think its people. Four of them. So much hope in that child.

I am the dead mother and these are my children. Oh, how I wish I could live.
