--Effervescent Daydream--
--
If an angel walked into the woods
By brooks of silver and boulders of bronze,
Which bear the scars of violent tempests
To see drooping chains of fiery gold,
Only the most valiant would follow.
--
Yet any idle man would tread the heavy footfalls
Of a monstrous giant-
Into a chasm of smoldering coals,
In which his sight would be ripped away;
There he'd feel the heartrending cries
Of the millions who are never purged of sin.
--
Forsaken, he'd call for a single drop
Of crystalline liquid to cool his swollen tongue,
And only the demons
Which scamper across the volcanic clay
Would shriek in delight at his inane misery.
--
Oh, angel! he calls. Desert me not!
Yet the white-winged lady of purity,
Whose dainty footfalls brush the earth,
Has no ears to hear his laments.
For she who is confined to that temperate forest of beauty,
Knows there is no need to strain for a listen:
From afar – too vast a distance – the eternal flames crackle.

I know, I know! All of you are going "WTF?" right now, right? Well, the poem connects to Light when you look at it metaphorically. It's a contemplation of Light's situation. This poem is saying that instead of Light being led into darkness by his wanting to do evil, he is killing because he feels afraid of the light (if that's not too ironic), and it is much easier to be evil than to be good. As the poem goes on, it jumps ahead to when Light is dieing, and it explains his sentiments right before death. The angel is supposed to be L's apparition (metaphorically!), which won't save Light because Kira has taken over.
Is that too confusing? If it is, sorry...
Anyway, I'd really appreciate reviews! Thanks!
