This one's been sitting for a while because my wonderful beta, redheadknits, suggested that I add more detail - but my character just didn't want to talk to me. So, I've decided to post it anyway ...

Anything Twilight-related belongs to S Meyer.

He was my brother's best friend, and I'd been in love with him since my freshman year of high school. Although he'd spent countless hours at our house in the past five years, I don't think he'd ever spoken more than a hundred words to me. I was just the "little sister" - until today, when he asked me to dinner.

It wasn't even really a "date". He'd picked me up from work as a favor to my brother. We were on the way to my place when he suddenly mentioned that he was hungry, and asked if I wanted to "get a bite to eat" somewhere. Not the way I'd pictured it in my dreams, but I wasn't about to miss the opportunity to spend a little more time with him. So, I said "Yes"; maybe a little too eagerly, but Emmett didn't seem to notice.

There wasn't a lot of small talk during dinner, but the silence didn't seem awkward. I was happy just to be at the same table with him, knowing that other girls were admiring him, wishing they were me. They didn't need to know that it wasn't a date - that Emmett just wanted company while he ate. There were no meaningful glances, no lingering over coffee or dessert. The short drive from the restaurant to my apartment was also accomplished without many words being said.

Emmett walked me to my door.

He leaned forward and kissed my forehead, then gently cupped my face in one hand and brushed his thumb across my cheekbone. Smiling into my eyes, he whispered, "Baby girl, I don't want this night to end."

And then his lips met mine.
