Reasons why The Hunger Games is better than Twilight
The lead characters. Katniss is strong, brave and self sufficient. When her father died and her mother went "comatose," she was forced into a position where she had to put food on the table by any means. She does not complain. She just gets on with things. She struggles with all her emotions- not just "love" (or lust). Her life, and that of her family and friends, is threatened- not by some external force that is rarely seen- but by the government of her country. It is a real threat that is always seen and felt. She volunteers for the Hunger Games to protect her sister, knowing that she could die, but her sister's life was more important than her own.
Bella Swan. Bella has no real worries in life. Her father is alive and her mother is not in a coma. She does not have to worry about putting food on her table. She does not have to look after a younger sibling, but she wines all the time- about every little thing. Her life is "threatened" by a rarely seen force, but due to her "clairvoyant" friend Alice, her telepathic boyfriend (and their family) and shape shifting best friend (and his pack), her life is always safe. The few times she tries to "help" she nearly gets herself killed because she couldn't understand basic instructions.
However strong and skilled Katniss is, she still has her flaws and weaknesses. They make her more human, relatable and vulnerable. She is not "protected" or "shielded" all the time. She is really exposed to danger. Bella is an angst ridden teen. Her only weakness or flaw is been clumsy. She has two love interests of unmatched strength who keep her safe at all times.
Katniss' feelings for Peeta are made even more unpredictable due to the Capitol's insistence to use the relationship for ratings and dramatic effect. Two actors forced to act in love often find it difficult to define how they feel for each other outside of performing. Whereas: Bella is entirely in love with Edward and their biggest concern is that he will hurt her; so, there is little actual romantic conflict here.
The world of "The Hunger Games" is such that all of the main characters are forced to mature beyond their years. They can handle complex emotions to such an extent that when they do break down, or feel the strain, you know that the preassure on them is more than what most people in the real world could handle.
The Hunger games questions the society we live in- from reality tv, to celebrity culture, to government control. Twilight deals with the love story between Edward and Bella and the problems it brings.
Yes, technically Katniss and Bella are in a love triangle. But unlike Bella, Katniss is not defined by the men she loves. And Gale and Peeta are not unhealthily obsessed with Katniss, as Jacob and Edward are with Bella (and vice versa).
Gale & Peeta Jacob & Edward: Gale and Peeta love Katniss unconditionally. Jacob and Edward treat Bella like a prize they are desperate to control.
