Small. Yes, the house was small but cozy. Dave looked at the building, his eyes turning a lighter shade and heart filling a peaceful sensation. He never in his entire life thought that he'd have a place to look forward to come back to, to call home. A real one, not just a place where he lived with Alex or something.
All the past forgotten, future never thought of yet. The only thing that mattered what he had at the moment. And Dave Brewer never wanted to lose it.
The barking of Jimbo (he didn't like the name but she did…), a small black puppy, brought Dave back to reality.
"Hey, buddy!" He patted the animal that was happily jumping on his leg, looking through the wide-open front door of the house.
Nearing the entrance, Dave could hear the voices. Two to be exact. Probably Jodi. She was always at their place nowadays. Pregnancy made her even lazier then she already was. Well, at least Dave liked to joke about it. Partly true! She elbowed him in the ribs and made him apologize. Of course, he did.
Dave stopped in the doorframe. The two women were in the kitchen and oblivious to his presence. Jodi was sitting on the chair behind the table, rubbing her big bally every once in a while, making jokes about Alex's attitude these days and protective he's gotten.
But she. She was standing in front of the oven in her long pale yellow skirt and white top, hair in a messy bun on the top of her head, no make-up. She putting something just made of the oven, the fresh scent of it boring through his mind.
And then suddenly he once again understood why he loved her. It wasn't because she's been through everything with him, not because she's been waiting for him a lot, and even not because she was kind and loving, but because of all the little things, little details that always made him feel wanted, brought the feel of belonging…
"Oh, Dave, hey!" His train of thoughts stopped when the curly blonde called for him from her sitting position behind the wooden table.
"Hey, big ball! What's up?" He answered, making his way to the oven to greet his wife with a soft kiss on the lips.
"Don't call me that!" Jodi said dangerously, taking a bite of a green apple.
"No need to get so defensive." Dave looked at the woman, standing right next to him, for support. She just grinned and shook her head 'no'. "Who's Alex?"
"Good. Still hoping to win the Best Father Award if it exists." Jodi sighed. "I mean, he's been a fatherly figure for such a big brunch of babies but that's his own so…I think it's safe to say he's thrilled."
Then she made an afford to stand up:
"Ok, guys, I'll see you later. Have to go back to Drovers."
"Bye!"
"See you!"
Jodi waved a hand and disappeared through the opened door.
"So…" Dave turned to face the woman of his life, encircling his strong arms around her. "When are we gonna have our own little Dave Jr.?"
Kate looked up in his eyes and smiled slyly, kissing him gently on the cheek and then on the corner of the lips. As if she new something he didn't.
"Kate?" Dave gave her a questioning look.
She smiled again and hugged her husband tightly…yes, he didn't know a lot of things yet…
