Set many years in the future, Scully & Mulder, now well into their golden years think back on their quests with the FBI, & the X-Files. As always, please R&R.

Dana Scully sat in the warmth of a sunbeam, watching a group of four children play their assorted games in the cul-de-sac in front of their townhouse. "They're still at it?" Mulder said as he slowly pulled up a chair to join her, even after all their years together, the sound of his voice still made her heart flutter & brought a smile to her face. "I'm so glad that he doesn't blame us, Mulder." Scully said, Mulder put his arm around her & nodded in agreement as they watched a middle-aged man play catch with a small boy. "It still amazes me that he tracked us down all on his own." Mulder said as the man waved at them, he looked remarkably like Mulder, except for the eyes, he had Scully's eyes. "He is his father's son, that's for sure." Scully said as she gave Mulder one of her looks. "Yes, but he inherited his mother's enduring faith in humanity." Mulder replied as he took hold of her hand & kissed it as they heard the door open. "No running please!" William's voice could be heard over the thundering feet as he fetched them all juice boxes from the refrigerator & joined his parents at the window as the kids settled in front of the television to watch cartoons.

"So, Nancy's teaching again today, huh?" Mulder said after a short interlude of comfortable silence. "Yeah, she's not very happy about having repeat students, she says they don't make trainees like they used to." He said with a grin as he eyed his parents. "You're right, now they make smart ones who don't want to waste their lives like I did." Mulder said humorously. "So what if the Government never listened? What matters is that you created awareness in the public." William replied as he put a hand on his father's shoulder, just then, they heard the door open & close once more. "Did I hear something about the Government never listening?" Nancy said as she was greeted by the kids, Nancy was a tall, black haired beauty of Italian decent. She & William had met ten years ago back when he was still working with the FBI & they tied the knot a couple of years later. William now worked as a behavioral profiler for the FBI & did most of his work from home. "It was so nice of you to bring the kids over, William. I know how busy you've been on the Werner case lately." Scully said as William shared a hug with his parents. "I want us all to be able to make up for the time we lost." He said as they saw him out.

"You know, Dana, I never thought I would be able to say this but my life is finally complete. I could die tomorrow & not have any regrets." Mulder said as he watched William's SUV disappear around the corner. "Hey, just don't leave without telling me, I'm not having you ditch me like you always used to." Scully said. "I bet you thought that I was a pompous jack ass for doing that." Mulder said with a laugh. "I did at first; I thought that since you had been working alone so long, that's the way you wanted it to stay." "But you wouldn't give up; I can't even put into words what your perseverance & your strict rationalism meant to me. You held fast to the ways of science & I don't think I've ever thanked you for not giving up on me & walking away." Mulder said as he pulled her close. "These last forty years have been thanks enough, Mulder." She said with a smile.
