Just Another Boy/Girl Story
She knows how the story goes.
Once upon a time Boy meets Girl, Girl likes Boy and Boy likes Girl. Girl and Boy parade around smiling, very happy.
Something happens, so insert particular tragedy here. In this example, we will say said tragedy was Boy's fault.
So Boy fucks it up, and Girl gets mad. Girl writes epic love song where she wants it back/gets revenge on boy/keys his car, something like that.
Inevitably, Girl gets over Boy. Girl moves on and finds Man, and Girl and Man live happily ever after. One day Girl and Man get to rub it in Boy's face, he realizes what he missed on and Girl just gives him the bird and a snarky line. And Girl and Man live happily ever after.
Leah Clearwater knows how the story goes.
Right now she is at the "Boy has fucked it up", only she's not moving on. She's not getting angry, she doesn't even feel bad anymore. She doesn't feel anything at all.
There is no hope, in this scenario, there will be no Man and no birds.
There is only Leah Clearwater, in her room, staring at the little piece of glitter on her ceiling from when she tried to jump rope in the house.
There is only an empty room, with empty promises, and an empty Girl.
Because it's impossible to have the happily ever after, when all you want is a redo of the once upon a time.
