Sorry it's so short, but I absolutely had to write this.

.

At night, when everyone is asleep, he helps her.

She is not his friend, nor his enemy; just simply there. A person, a girl, a Dauntless-born initiate. They are not introduced, but he knows her name, and she knows what everyone else does.

That's the boy with four fears. He came from Abnegation.

He knows she needs help. She is one more loss away from getting kicked out. One more loss away from being factionless, from sleeping on the streets in a cardboard box.

He still has a bit of Abnegation left in him. He gives up precious hours of sleep to help her fight, hours that could be spent dreaming about his father. He is happy to give up the nightmares, but knows he needs the rest.

All the same, the half of his soul that is good and charitable understands what she is going through.

He teaches her strategies, how to throw a punch, and how to make sure you don't go down. He shows her the ropes, lets her try some moves out, and knows she's set.

The next day, when everyone expects her to fall to the floor, she is making droplets of blood fly. They had paired her up against Zeke, a boy she had always had a tiny crush on since Lower Levels, and he loses. He was sure to be ranked number one, and he lost to a girl who is widely thought of as weak.

Her fists pierced his side, her punch knocking the wind from his lungs. Zeke knew his friend always had a trump card, but her never knew it would hurt so much.

She knows she should be proud that she is stronger. She knows she should be proud that she is not going to be kicked out of her faction, that she may even get ranked in the top three, but she isn't.

She isn't proud. The only emotion she feels after beating Zeke to a pulp is… simple, quiet gratitude. To him. Four, the one who patiently taught her, night after night, how to protect herself and fight her way through initiation.

He saved her.

And a friendship bloomed.
