Lament of an Elf

For thousands of years my kin have dwelled

In Lorien and Rivendell;

We spent our carefree nights and days

With dancing in the hidden glades,

Filling the air with Elven-song--

The world was pure, our lives were long.

The Shadow came, and Elves and Men

Together went to battle then:

The Ring, by which the war was won,

Was captured by Elendil's son;

His chance to destroy evil came,

He turned it down in search of fame.

Dark times are now in Middle Earth

Which test the weight of mortals' worth;

They must unite under Isildur's heir,

The Ring must be unmade with care.

The Valar's light begins to fade--

The time of Elves has passed away.

My people leave for the Undying Lands

And place this world in mortals' hands.

Our twilight falls; we say farewell

To Lorien and Rivendell,

But we will ever linger on

In mortals' tales and in their song.
