Against the Odds
Edward ran across the field, struggling to keep the items in his arms. He made his way over to Winry and Alphonse, who were playing dolls.
"Why I am playing dolls with you, Winry?"
"Cause I told you to, Alphonse!" She giggled. (Little did the two boys know at that time that women ALWAYS get what they want!)
Edward looked at the dolls with disgust. "Hey, Al, you wanna play something else than dolls?" Alphonse dared not to say anything, but there was a new spark in his eye. "Okay, good!"
"He didn't say anything though!" Winry argued. "And why do you have a broom? And why do you have a shoe?" (1)
"These are the props for our war. Okay, Winry, pick the broom to be your right hand, and the shoe to be your left. Now put your hands behind your back." Winry did just that. "Al and I will pick a hand, and we get that item to be our weapon. I'll pick first. I pick the right hand."
Winry paused to think about it. "Wait…"
"Okay then, I'll pick the left!"
"Ed gets the broom, and you get the shoe, Al." Winry muttered something else as the boys went to grab their items.
After that, Edward started to make up the rules. "Okay, you lose when you're hit and fall down, or you give up. Winry's the judge. Got it?"
"What do we win?"
"A kiss from Winry!"
"Hey--"
"GO!"
Edward swung his broom at Alphonse. Alphonse dodged, and looked at his shoe as if trying to figure out what part to hit Edward with. Edward swung again and again, each time getting closer to hitting Alphonse.
Finally, Alphonse stuck his foot in the shoe, and ran off.
"Come back here! I'm gonna get you," Edward yelled. He bounded after Alphonse. But, Alphonse was the faster runner. He ran around in circles, leaving Edward to try to catch up with him. (Of course, Edward never thought to start running the OTHER way around the circle.)
They ran around for fifteen minutes. Winry, bored, started picking flowers. She turned back toward Edward and Alphonse; she was supposed to be judge after all.
Alphonse hopped on one foot while he took off the shoe. Edward caught up to him, panting. "I finally got you." He made a feeble attempt of swinging the broom, and missed.
"No, this time I've got you, brother!" Alphonse tackled Edward. He then stuck the shoe in his face. "Smell the stinky shoe!"
Edward's face was buried in the oversized, sweaty shoe. "I give, I give!"
Alphonse got up, and immediately laid down on the ground. "I won."
"Yeah, you did."
Winry came over. "I don't really want to, but you won against the odds. So, here." Winry gave Alphonse a small kiss on the cheek, and then she skipped off, humming a tune.
"That was awesome."
