12:05 am
Mike Logan lay back onto his pillows and tried to catch his breath. With a smile, he turned to look at Kate, to find her smiling back at him. "You're smiling," he observed.
"Yeah, I am," she returned, "So are you. Guess I'm not the only one who had a good time tonight, huh?"
He turned on his side and draped his arm across her stomach, "I kinda liked the end of the evening best."
She turned to face him, "Why don't I doubt that? Come on, you know you enjoyed the whole night."
"Yeah, it was okay," he shrugged, then laughed.
"What are you laughing at?"
"Remembering you and McCoy singing the Clash song," he shook his head.
"Hey, if half the court house wasn't there, we'd have been slam dancing, too," she sniffed. "But, we've gotta keep that DA exterior thing going."
"I don't know, I kinda like the tight assed DA exterior from time to time," he teased.
"Except when she's got you on the witness stand, huh?"
"Nah," he kissed her, "That's foreplay." He kissed her again, "Happy Birthday, Katie."
"Tomorrow's my birthday, Mike," she reminded.
"Its 12:05, it is tomorrow," was his smart return, as he pulled away and got out of bed.
"Where are you going?" she asked, watching as he walked to the dresser and opened the top drawer. Closing it, he turned and walked back to the bed.
"To get this," he said, slipping into bed next to her. He held out a small box wrapped in silver paper.
"What's this?"
"Your birthday present," he returned, holding the box out.
"But, we're doing dinner and the room at the Peninsula…" she protested.
"That's for both of us," he dismissed, "This is just for you. Now are you gonna take this or do I have to open it for you?"
She took the present and pulled off the wrapping paper to reveal a black velvet jewelers box. Looking up at him, she asked, "What did you do?"
"I knocked over a jewelry store, just open it," he rolled his eyes.
Kate opened the box to reveal an emerald cut diamond pendent on a white gold chain. "Mikey," she smiled, "It's beautiful."
"You like it?" he asked, sounding unsure.
"What's not to like," she laughed, "That's gotta be a full carat."
"It is," he proudly said.
"You're spending too damn much money on me…"
He kissed her, "Stop. You deserve it. You've put up with more of my shit in the past year," he shrugged.
"And you don't put up with mine?"
"Not even close," he kissed her again. "Do you have any idea how much I love you?"
She smiled, holding up the necklace. "I'm getting a good idea."
"That doesn't even come close," he seriously said. "I don't know what I'd do with out you, Katie Logan."
"Well, you don't have to worry about that, cuz we're stuck with each other for the rest of our lives," she said, kissing him. "And we're both too damn stubborn not to live well into our hundreds."
"Hundreds, huh?" he laughed. "Think we'll still be doing it when we're in our hundreds?"
"Maybe not quite as actively," she mused, "But knowing you? Yeah, we'll still be doing it in some fashion."
He pulled her into his arms and kissed her full and hard, "Hell, we'll be waking up the nursing home."

3:45 pm
"Okay, Jami," Kate began, setting Jameson into her playpen. "You hang there for a few. Bree's going to keep an eye on you."
"Bee," Jameson grinned, clapping her hands.
"That's me!" six year old Brianna Logan began, picking up Jameson's teddy bear. "Let's play with your bear, Jami."
"She's so good with her," Kate said, looking up as Mike's sister, Tess, walked in from the kitchen.
"Bree's Jami's biggest fan," Tess laughed. "Well, Uncle Mike comes first…"
"Of course," Kate laughed. "Speaking of which, he should probably be on his way home shortly."
"What time are your reservations?"
"7:30," she shrugged. "I told him he doesn't have to take me to Jean Georges, but he was very insistent."
"It's your birthday, let him spoil you," Tess dismissed.
"Yeah, but," Kate shrugged, "Dinner at Jean Georges, a room at the Peninsula? That's not us."
"Maybe it should be," Tess smiled.
"If our last name was Trump instead of Logan, I'd agree with you," she laughed. "I know he's been cooking up this whole birthday thing, but he's already spent enough money." Kate's hand went to the diamond pendant that hung from a white gold chain around her neck.
"I knew he couldn't hold onto that thing until tonight," Tess laughed.
"Good move telling him not to pick it up until last night," Kate agreed. "I'll give him credit; at least he made it til after midnight, so it was actually my birthday."
"Come on, Kate, he's been so into this whole birthday idea," Tess went on, as they sat on the sofa. "Don't tell him I'm telling you this, but he's been driving me crazy with it since the holidays."
"That's so not him," Kate fondly said, "Guess he's mellowing out, huh?"
"Not that I knew him before, but from what the two of you have told me, it sure sounds like it."
Kate opened her mouth to reply, but was cut off by the ringing of the telephone. "Bet that's him," she laughed, reaching over and lifting the receiver. She placed it to her ear and spoke, "Hello?"
"Kate? It's Dan Ross," began the familiar male voice.
Something in his tone set of a warning buzzer in Kate's head, but she kept her tone light, "If you're looking for Mike, he hasn't gotten home yet."
"Kate, there's no easy way to say this, but Mike's been shot," he simply said.
Unwilling to believe what she heard, she answered with a sharp, "What?"
"He was with Goren, apprehending a suspect when it happened, that's all I know right now," Ross explained. "They took him to Bellevue."
"How bad is it?" she asked, feeling Tess' eyes upon her.
"There's a black and white waiting downstairs to take you to Bellevue," he said.
"You didn't answer me," she said, her tone still calm, "How bad is it?"
"They took him straight to surgery," he quietly said.
"Okay…"
"Kate?" Tess asked, alarmed by Kate's expression.
"Kate," Ross repeated, "There's a black and white waiting to take you to the hospital."
"Thank you," she simply said.
"I'll see you there," he concluded, hanging up the phone.
Kate sat for a moment, motionless. She willed herself to process what just happened, but found her brain fighting every step of the way.
"Kate?" Tess repeated, finally pulling Kate from her haze. "What's going on?"
"Mike's been shot," she said, the words feeling strange as the come out of her mouth. "He's at Bellevue. There's a squad car waiting to take us," she said, her mind finally kicking into gear. She stood up. "Let me get Jami's bag…"
"Mommy?" Bree asked, walking over to Tess. One look at her daughter's face, told Tess that Bree had heard the whole conversation.
"Can you help get Jami into her jacket so we can go to the hospital, Baby?" Tess asked, trying to sound positive.
Bree nodded, bottom lip trembling, "Is he gonna be okay, Mommy?"
"Of course he will," Tess smiled, hugging her daughter. "Now, if you can help get Jami ready, I'm going to go help Aunt Kate get some stuff together, okay?"
"I can do it, Mommy," Bree solemnly said.
"You're a big helper, Bree," Tess smiled, "I'll be right back."
Kate stood at Jami's changing table, holding her diaper bag in one hand and a stack of diapers in the other. She'd thrown a few random things into the bag and was grabbing the diapers when her eyes hit upon a framed picture of Mike holding Jami hours after her birth. Unaware that Tess was holding the camera, he was gazing down at Jami, completely fascinated by his new daughter. The expression on his face bordered on awe. It was her favorite picture of him, as much as he hated it, calling it sappy.
"He's gonna be okay," Tess' voice began, pulling her from her thoughts before they could go astray.
"I know," Kate said, taking a deep breath and shoving the diapers into the bag. She turned to Tess. "He's too damn stubborn not to be okay."
Without a word, they stepped to each other and held each other tightly for a moment, sharing their fear and their strength. Neither would allow themselves to cry, for fear it would set off the other. Instead, they took the moment to pull themselves together before stepping apart.
"We've got a squad car waiting for us," Tess said, breaking the silence.
Kate nodded, "Let's get over to Bellevue."
