The children were all abuzz with life already this morning, it vaguely made him wonder how it were possible. He was nervous about his first day of third grade at this new school, scuffling his feet as his tiny pale hand death gripped the office secretary looking up with huge crimson eyes pleading to not be left alone with all these rambunctious nightmares. The secretary displayed no pity for the strange young child however, opening the door and tugging him in. Immediately all eyes rested on him and he tucked his head down, taking shelter in raven depths as the two adults spoke. He flicked his eyes up to see the teacher give a strained smile and then pried his hand away from her, shuffling the other woman out.
"Class!" the woman dinged a bell on her desk to snatch their attention, "We have a new student today. This is Vincent." A massive welcome was recieved from the rest of the children, all their huge eyes on him. Vincent shied back, none too keen on being the sudden center of attention, however his eyes never met the ground. Instead they locked on a boy in the front that hadn't made a fool of himself already this morning. His short blonde hair was a mess and he had the most electric blue eyes Vincent had ever seen. The boy's trousers were caked with dirt and mud but it was his smile that attracted him the most. He was the only child in the class entirety that made him truly feel welcome.
"Vincent, why don't you take a seat?" the teacher returned to her desk leaving him to fend for himself. A chair pushed out right in front of him and the boy he'd watched before was grinning from ear to ear.
"Sit here!" he demanded.
"Okay..." Vincent slid into the chair, his voice surprisingly light for such an ominous looking child. He lacked the life the other students seemed to have, or could rather be attributed to being more mature than them. Raven black hair was brushed back in a huge mass over his shoulders, tied in a tiny ponytail at the end to keep it uniform though several thick locks had fallen free to frame a pale, angular face inset with deep red eyes. He was truly a strange child but rather than shy away, this boy across from him seemed intrigued.
"Your name is..." Vincent looked at the nametag taped to the desk, carefully sounding it out. "Ci-dolfus?"
"I hate my name." the boy complained, "call me Cid!"
"Cid then." Vincent gave him a tiny trace of a smile, kicking his feet.
"Where ya from?"
"Nibelheim."
"Where the hell's that?!"
"CID!" the teacher shrieked, "We do not use that language here!" Cid rolled his eyes, Vincent only laughed. Cid was quite the character. Above them the obnoxiously loud bell rang and the teacher rose to the door, the students all clamoring along after her in one giant fury. Cid bolted out of his own chair, grabbing Vincent and practically dragging the new boy towards the door. Vincent's eyes got huge, looking around for any explanation.
"It's recess!" Cid explained for him. "C'mon we gotta get to the swings before anyone else!" Vincent cracked a small smile and tailed after his new friend.
It was a hell of a way to kick off the new year.
