Dear Dad-
Recently Bobby casually told me about the conversation you two had at that Memorial Day barbeque a couple of years ago. I nearly dropped when he mentioned that you asked him his intentions toward me! At first I was annoyed that you would do something so old fashioned and paternalistic. How dare you! If I had known at the time, I would have been totally embarrassed and absolutely furious.
But I didn't know. Thank god. It kept me from acting stupid and maybe screwing up the best person who ever walked into my life.
As I sit here nursing our baby Maggie I still can't believe she is mine…ours. Sometimes I think she is pure Bobby, that there is nothing of me in her. But then I realize she and I do share a common trait. We are both experts at wrapping her father around our little fingers.
Bobby was born to be a dad. I had occasionally seen him with children in our work, and certainly with my nieces and nephews. It always amazed me that a forty-something bachelor was so good with kids. His relationship with Maggie is a treasure in our family. She is the luckiest child in the world. And I am the luckiest woman to be able to share my life and my love with Bobby Goren.
So, on this Father's Day I want to thank you, Dad, for being old fashioned and paternalistic, for giving Bobby the push he needed two years ago. I still can't believe you actually told him step into her! But I am grateful that you did and that he took your advice to heart. If you hadn't done so, I might never be holding our Maggie in my arms and Bobby in my heart.
Your loving daughter,
Alex
