Goodnight Is Not The End…

PC Millie Brown

-

She'd never been particularly good with goodbyes. She had a habit of getting far too emotional about them. It was probably why she'd always avoided them. She'd made out to herself it was because goodbyes had such negative connotations and she didn't like to start out a new opportunity with negativity hanging over it. She was pathetically superstitious like that…

Goodnight, goodnight my love…

The day had been interesting, certainly one of the better last days. Helping out CID on a case that had started with Mickey homeless and gone strangely downhill from there. Working in close proximity to her crush hadn't made it any better, if anything it was worse. And even harder to bear, he'd been somewhat human to her. Max Carter human was one thing, but Max Carter human and complimenting was scary.

The worst part too was the fact he didn't seem to be aware it was her last day. Even when her sergeant made a big deal out of it and DI Manson wished her luck in the future, he hadn't been there to notice. He didn't bring it up like everyone else had. She didn't bring it up in front of him because she assumed he knew but didn't care, but by the time the end of her shift came and he hadn't said anything, she'd decided to address it.

She'd passed him as she left CID, headed back for the locker rooms to change out of her uniform for the last time at Sun Hill. "Are you busy sarge? Just thought I'd mention I…"

He'd cut her off with a single finger, grabbing his phone. As he spoke into it he jotted a note on a piece of paper and passed it to her, walking past deep in conversation. Millie read it quickly. 'Sorry, be right back, talk then.'

That was when Millie knew she didn't have to say it.

She'd rushed off to get changed and returned two minutes later with the words she needed to say.

Goodnight, goodnight my friend

Sarge… Max… (she hadn't known which was more appropriate and so put both)

I wasn't sure earlier if you knew it was my last day, so I acted like you did but didn't care. By writing this I'm hoping that was wrong and you just didn't know.

I know we rarely saw eye-to-eye, but I respected your work ethic and even your conviction, despite certain… how should I put it? …flaws in your judgement. I know you believed my methods were straight out of the rulebook, but maybe my style could've complimented yours. Who knows? Unfortunately we didn't really get enough of a chance to test that theory out. I do wish I had worked more cases with you, if only so you could see that I'm not the airhead you once said I was.

Don't worry; I'm sure you didn't mean it the way it came out.

Just a note to wish you luck with everything in the future, and hoping you wish the same for me.

Good luck sarge and goodbye

. PC Millie Brown

Even though the day is over…

"PC Brown," a voice called her name and Millie turned as she grabbed her coat from the hanger by the door, seeing him as he entered the office. She'd just finished the letter and had taped it to his computer screen, assuring he wouldn't miss it. One cheeky move before she left. "You did well today, with the victim."

"Thank you sarge." Millie smiled. She started to move away, but he stopped her again.

"You wanted to tell me something earlier?" Max asked, scratching the base of his chin in a way that made Millie smile.

"It's okay sarge, I'm sure you'll find out soon enough." Then, with a smile and a nod, Millie turned away.

"Night Millie."

She didn't look at him as she responded. "Night sarge." Then, taking her leave, Millie pushed her way out of Sun Hill CID for the last time, leaving Max Carter's quiet figure behind.

Goodnight is not the end…
