Sharp Practice

"The sword is appointed to be polished, to be grasped with the hand; it is sharpened and polished, made ready for the hand of the slayer" - Ezekiel 21:11

A/N: John's journal considers life in the Bunker. "From the point of view of an inanimate object," written for the 'Drabbles Every Weekend' challenge at SPN BigPretzel on LiveJournal. For Lily, her suggestion; I just ran with it.

John's Journal

When we settled in the Bunker, I wasn't happy to find myself surrounded by a bunch of hoity-toity academic types. Yeah, I know that's jealously talking; that Sam's a sharp one, but he's always been too easily swayed by a pretty face and a fancy title for my liking.

Fortunately, Dean's more about family and what's inside and it's thanks to his loving applications of duct tape that I'm still in one piece.

I might be dog-eared and stained, but I'm the first one they reach for and I keep their secrets safe.

I'm the legacy. The real Winchester Gospel.

A/N: The Winchesters have a weapon more piercing than pistols and more cutting than knives.

Sharp Tongued

"They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim cruel words like deadly arrows" - Psalm 64:3

Dean doesn't like to admit to a sharp tongue, let alone that it's a reinforced trait inherited from both parents, but even amid rose-tinted memories of his early years he recalls the harsh words his mother would fire at his father.

John, of course, was the master of the verbal take-down and, thanks to that, Sam and Dean are no slouches either. Still, every hunter knows you select your weapon for the intended prey; so the most barbed and piercing comments are reserved for family.

If only each deployment wasn't always in the red-heat of 'battle' and inevitably greatly regretted.

A/N: Castiel should keep his wits about him. For LeeMarieJack et al., who wanted more of Castiel at the mercy of Winchester pranking.

Look Sharp at the Sharp End

"The sharp thorn often produces delicate roses" - Ovid

Dean held out the pie for inspection, grinning at Castiel's obvious admiration for his cooking skills.

The crisp meringue surface rose and fell in perfect waves, reminding Castiel of the frigid majesty of the ice fields of the north. Cutting through such a beautiful work of art should be considered a crime.

A comment to that effect was on the tip of Castiel's tongue when, thanks to a sudden shove from Dean, the pie was instead.

Castiel blinked. "The sweetness of the topping perfectly balances the sharp lemon of the filling," he managed at last, heroically ignoring the sniggering Winchesters.
