Sharpay sat at the counter in the enormous kitchen. Her brother Ryan was playing some show tunes on the stereo in the living room. It almost made her laugh…but when she thought of her mother, she immediately stopped laughing.
Mrs. Evans had forced Ryan to help Sharpay out with her routine when they were 3. Sharpay hadn't wanted to do it, but her mother really wanted the twins in show business.
Sharpay came to love it, and Ryan learned to tolerate it. When Mrs. Evans died, Sharpay figured Ryan wanted to keep the tradition going in memory of their mother.
She soon learned that Ryan really wanted to stop with the show tunes…but she wouldn't let him. Sharpay loved it, and it was her only connection to her mother.
Sharpay had loved her mother. She had felt so much closer to her than to her father. Her father was so silent, the way Ryan used to be.
Ryan was always masking his hurt or annoyance. He did it by dancing, and oddly enough, that was what caused the hurt and the annoyance.
Sharpay didn't want to hurt her brother anymore, but she thought maybe it was time for her to get what she wanted. She made Ryan continue with the showbiz and whatnot.
Sharpay sat there, listening to the show tunes with a heart full of sadness, hurt, annoyance, confusion…and love. She didn't know exactly what she felt love for at that moment, whether it was for her brother, her mom, or the show tunes.
Well, whatever it was, she didn't want it to end. Unless, well…maybe she did want it to end, because then she wouldn't be so confused by trying to figure out what she was feeling or why she was feeling it.
Sharpay always wondered why Ryan wanted to make her so happy all the time. She wondered why he didn't notice that she was in more pain seeing him try then if he would just walk away or refuse to do anything she wanted.
Ryan wasn't doing this for their mom, Sharpay knew it. But she didn't really think that he knew it. She always meant to talk to Ryan about it…
Ryan was always busy helping her out. She didn't know why he always did it. He didn't enjoy it anymore than he did 10 years ago. And she didn't enjoy seeing him like that.
Ryan thought she did…she thought she could figure him out. Ryan thought Sharpay enjoyed his pain. Well, at least he convinced himself that she was the one trying.
Ryan knew that his mother wanted Sharpay to do this…but Ryan didn't have to be punished for it. He loved it…helping Sharpay was great for him…he just didn't understand why his dad wasn't more into it.
Mr. Evans didn't care what the twins did, truly he didn't. He didn't care what anyone else did or didn't do. Ever since the death had occurred. Well…not just one death.
Not only had Mrs. Evans died in that year, but Julia, Candace, and Andrew had died that year. Julia and Candace were Mr. Evans sisters, and Andrew was his son from his first marriage.
That was a horrible time for Mr. Evans especially, but of course Sharpay and Ryan suffered too.
Sharpay missed her mom everyday. She hated the fact that she couldn't show how much she missed her mom.
Sharpay wasn't afraid that Ryan would see through her phony act. She knew he would. She knew that he should.
She wanted people to see the real her. Wait, no she didn't! Who was she kidding! That's why she got into musicals!
The acting…she didn't want to be herself! She tried to fool herself all the time! Sharpay knew it! She tried to fool everyone! She even made lists sometimes!
I AM CURRENTLY FOOLING…
MYSELF
RYAN
DAD
EVERYONE AT SCHOOL
EVERYONE OUT OF SCHOOL
EVERYONE ELSE
…INTO THINKING THAT I AM OKAY
Sharpay was crazy. She was insane! And that's why everybody loved her!
