Drabble – Guarantee

There was no guarantee that it was going to work. The odds were against it.

No amount of wishful thinking could make it a success, just a lot of luck.

The word had been spread silently that a party was going to be given. Not just any party but a birthday party for the King. Now the only dilemma was to keep it from the nosey King himself, no small task considering it was Alexander.

Instead of having the party on his special day, it had been decided to have it a week early to throw him off. Silent and secretive plans were being made behind every door. The closer the time came to the party and Alexander not finding out made it all the more fun for everyone.

Finally the day arrived and the great hall was decorated brightly and festively. The doors were locked so no prying eyes and kingly busybodies could see it before the appointed hour. Everyone was to meet back in front of the room and assemble to surprise the King.

Quietly the guests made their way to the great hall, quietly the door was unlocked and quietly the guests all stared at the King as he sat in the middle of the room in the seat of honor. Not a word was said as he raised the wine goblet in his hand and grinned widely at all of them.

"Come in everyone," he said sweetly, "I guarantee you will have a good time."

Later as they sat and enjoyed the celebration Hephaestion asked Alexander how he had figured it out.

"I got hungry last night and went to the kitchen to get something to eat and saw the cake with my name on it."

Hephastion shook his head thinking that only Alexander's stomach and sweet tooth could ruin a perfectly good plan.
