Colby knows what it's like to be shot. Not only because he's been shot but he understands the consequences of the action. He understands the pain, the risk of death or serious injury. He knows that even if you manage to avoid death or vital organs the risk of infection is nearly as bad.
So when the guy he was chasing for the past four blocks finally gives up, turns around and points a gun at him, Colby knows what to expect.
But then the gun fires and instinctively Colby's eyes close he's surprise when all the things he knows to expect don't happen.
When he opens his eyes and find David a few feet away, crumpled to the ground gagging in pain, Colby feels like he's the one who's been shot. The shock is worse then anything.
He runs to his partner and knells down.
He doesn't realize he was holding his breath until he lets it go.
David was wearing a vest. He wasn't.
"Scared the shit outta me, Sinclair." He gasped with a strained smile.
David sucked in breath and looked up at him, "You gonna get this SOB or just sit here with me?"
Colby looked away from David long enough to see the suspect dodge around a corner, he looked back down. "You going to be alright?"
David rolled his eyes. "Get out of here Granger."
Colby got to his feet and took off, looking over his shoulder only once.
He blinked again. He hadn't expected that. He hadn't expected his partner to suddenly appear and literally throw himself in the way of danger.
Colby knew what to expect in war…but love he was still figuring out.
