Breathe

Jack looked down at the prefab through her binoculars. It looked too fucking neat and picket fencey. There were toys in the yard that must belong to relatives of hers, not that she cared. It had been too long since she'd seen her mother last. Not since Cerberus had taken her away, telling her stupid gullible mother that she, Jack, was dead.
She had been through hell to get here. Pragia, the merc bands, the pirates, Purgatory and finally the Normandy.
This wasn't home to her any more, the Normandy was. They'd both been through shit and come out of it almost whole. Sure there were a few patches here and there, but on the inside not much had changed.
Jack stiffened as the door opened and a teenager ambled out, kicking a toy out of the way as he went wherever he was going.
A woman appeared in the doorway and shouted something towards him, causing the teenager to wave disinterestedly towards her.
She made her way slowly down the hill, towards that red lit door, every second causing a new feeling to start and spread from her stomach. Fear.
Approaching the door she pounded on it twice before stepping backwards, awaiting that moment when she would finally be reunited with her mother.
The door lock turned to green, Jack held her breath, looking down at her feet. The next time she looked up, she met eyes that mirrored her own brown ones. Finally breathing Jack crossed her arms over her chest before uttering two words she had been waiting to say since Pragia had burnt to the ground.
"Hi Mom."
