Author's Note: After reading Deathly Hallows I couldn't help but write about Snape's last thoughts. I apologize for any minor discrepancies between the story and the book. I didn't have my copy on hand when I wrote this.

As Voldemort continued to talk, Severus came to the conclusion that this was it. There was no more he could do. It was over and within minutes he would be dead. Just like her.

But no. Not yet. He couldn't die yet. He still hadn't fulfilled Dumbledore's last request of him. He needed more time.

He only half listened as Voldemort continued on about the Elder Wand. His mind searched frantically for the words that would dissuade the dark lord from killing him.

No, he could not die now. Especially considering the last bit of knowledge that he must impart to Potter was still hidden in the dark caverns of his mind.

He could only stand frozen as he saw the huge snake, Nagini looming over him. In the few moments before she struck, Severus could do nothing but hate himself. He had been unable to be her true friend until the day she died. Unable to be the one that she fell in love with. Unable to save her from dying. And now he had not been strong enough or intelligent enough to stay alive to see that her death was justified.

The pain meant nothing to him. The fangs piercing him meant nothing. Severus Snape would go to his death hating himself for not being enough for her. Yet he still loved her just as much as the first time he had seen her smile.

Snape lay there feeling his blood seep out of him as his life slowly drained away.

And then he heard them…

Footsteps were coming.

Severus strained to see who it was and let out a sigh of relief as Harry James Potter came to a halt in front of him.

He felt his spirits lift for a split second. Then they came crashing down as Severus could feel his life slipping away as it hurt beyond belief to breathe.

With the precise touch of a skilled Legilimens, Severus chose the memory of Dumbledore he needed. But looking up at the boy that had inherited the eyes of the one Severus had held dear, he knew it was not enough.

He searched his mind gathering the snippets of memory hidden inside that would tell Harry Severus' side of her story to her son. Summoning the last of his strength he told the boy to take the memories that were now gushing out of him.

Severus watched the boy gather his memories into a vial. And then the boy looked back at him. Emerald green eyes pierced his own. Looking into those eyes of her, Severus knew. Severus' part was over and now it was up to Harry to finish it. Severus' last thought was one of fulfillment.

Lily.
