Grief

A killing curse missed her by inches. She felt the air go hot next to her ear before the branch behind her shattered. Concealing herself behind the nearest tree, Hermione scanned the fray. She watched as the Order fought against the surrounding mass of Death Eaters. Curses were flying everywhere and bodies littered the forest floor. Hermione was trying to stem the flow from the gash in her arm when she saw it. Lying feet in front of her, blonde hair matted with blood, chest moving up and down in his desperate attempt to breath. A black cloaked Death Eater stood over him, wand leveled at Draco's chest, 'Farewell Draco, I'm so glad it was me who got to send you from this world. There is no mercy for blood traitors.' As the Death Eater opened his mouth to speak the killing curse, Hermione raised her wand and shouted 'Avada Kedavra!' and watched as the cloaked figure crumpled to the ground. Hermione pushed herself off the tree and ran to where Draco lay. She gripped him under the arms and pulled him out of the open, behind the relative safety of a fallen tree trunk. 'Draco.' She breathed, her hands jerkily brushing his bloodied hair off his face. 'Draco, can you hear me?' She asked; her breath hitching.

'I hear you, Granger.' He managed, his breath wheezing in his chest. He tried to smirk but only managed a grimace. Hermione's eyes burned from the effort of holding back her tears.

'Good,' she said as she continued to stroke his face, 'you know how I hate to repeat myself.' She managed a watery smile when his eyes found her face.

'I love you.' He breathed. A tear rolled down Hermione's cheek when Draco lifted a hand to her face.

'I love you too.' She said, her voice choking over the hot ball of tears in her throat. She turned her face into his hand and lifted her own to hold it there.

'Always,' Draco gasped, 'and always.' He smiled at her while his eyes clouded over. She sobbed, still clutching his limp hand to her cheek.

'No,' she moaned, 'no.' She shook his shoulders. 'You bastard, get up! Get up!' She pounded on his lifeless chest. 'Get up!' She wailed, 'Don't leave me here. Don't leave me!' She buried her face in his shirt and sobbed. 'I love you; always and always.'

Authors Note: I'm starting backwards, this will make more sense once I've posted the stuff that leads up to it.
