A/N: Test chapter for a new fanfiction. Tell me what you think!
The first thing he noticed was the cold.
He was surrounded by it, blanketed in a freezing layer of iced fire. It burned and numbed all at once, sending tingling needles of fiery-cold pain through his skin.
The next thing he noticed was the screaming.
It was the same scream, repeated every few seconds, muffled and distant but always there at the edge of his hearing.
After a few moments his head began to clear, and he could finally make out what the scream was saying.
"Shawn! Shawn!"
Jules?
He opened his eyes.
White.
White sky, white fog, white snow, white snowflakes, white... blizzard?
Blizzard!
"Jules!" Shawn abruptly sat up, then stifled a cry of pain as a jolt of pure agony shot through his head.
The world swayed to the side for a moment, and the next thing he knew was a faceful of snow.
Shawn groaned and slowly righted himself, holding his head in his hands. The scratchy fabric of his gloves unpleasantly rubbed against his face, but it was nothing compared to the throbbing in his head.
He concentrated, trying to remember how he got here. Let's see, he was wearing a coat, a hat, and gloves, which meant he must have planned to be here. So kidnapping was out. Now the question was why did he come here... And where was here?
Something to do with a case and... Canada? Investigating a building, then he and Jules went...
...Somewhere. Where was somewhere?
He lifted his head slightly and looked around. Snowflakes swirled around him, blown sideways by the wind. Endless white fog stretched in all directions.
"Shawn! Shawn!" The screaming was coming from his left.
"Jules?" Shawn shouted.
Shawn staggered to his feet, cradling his head. A wave of nausea and dizziness swept over him, nearly getting him another faceful of snow.
"Jules!" He turned and began to half-stagger, half-run towards the scream.
The world seemed to spin and sway around him as he ran, and it took most of his concentration just to stay upright.
The screams got louder as he neared their origin, and within moments he reached the source.
It was a large snowdrift, nearly as tall as Shawn. The screams were coming from its center.
"Jules!"
"Shawn! Shawn!"
Shawn raced over to it, still clutching his head. "I'm here Jules, hang on!"
He dove into it and started digging, ignoring the throbbing pain in his head and the nausea threatening to overwhelm him.
He dug his way to the center of the snowdrift, his hands growing numb despite his gloves. The ground swayed to the side, and Shawn stumbled, landing in the pile of snow.
"Shawn! Shawn!"
That was weird. The screams were coming from... underneath him.
"Jules? Jules, where are you!" Shawn began digging downwards. He stopped when he felt his hand hit something. He dug towards it, then stared down in disbelief.
Nestled in the snow was a small recording device, its play button pressed to on.
And coming from it was the sound of Juliet's screaming.
