My response to SilentOcarina's (tumblr) drabble of Mae's grave. Goddammit I ship LinkMae so hard!

Disclaimer: I do not own Link. But I do own Mae.

"Link…"

Her hand touched the familiar name carved on the stone. Brown eyes behind glasses, that used to be filled with so much light were now dull and lifeless. She didn't even try to hide it this time the way she did when her parents died. There was no point. The children weren't here, she left them at home so they wouldn't see this side of her.

It didn't matter to her how long its been, every passing second was one moment too long without him. A moment she could be spending with him. All memories of him were fresh in her mind, as if he were still there to make more with her. No matter how many new ones she made, none were as perfect, not as precious.

It hurt. It hurt worse than any torture anyone could inflict on her. 'Why did he have to die…?'

"I love you…" she whispered, choking on her own tears as she let herself fall onto her knees. "Please c-come back… i need you…"

Reaching to her side, she picked up a bouquet of forget-me-nots. It was their flower. Their promise to each other, that they would never forget the way other people seemed to do so easily nowadays, without looking back, no regrets, leaving without goodbye. She didn't need the promise. Mae could never do that, him being the only thing that would ever be in her mind. It didn't matter if how crazy she got, how much her illness caused her to forget everything. He and only he was on her mind. Nothing could ever replace him.

"I miss you so much…" the sobbing wouldn't stop as she held his green hat in her hands. She never washed the thing, wanting to keep his scent close to her. She closed her eyes as she place it on her head, pretending it was him, teasing her again for taking it as she always did when he was still here. A sad laugh escaped her lips. She remembered how much fun they used to have. All the tickle fights, all the adventures, running around, chasing each other, sometimes just relaxing and watching the clouds. There was never a boring day when she was with him.

She remembered how perfectly her hand seemed to fit in his, and how she just seemed to fit when he hugged her. They were like two puzzle pieces, only they fit perfectly with each other, and no one else would be able to match, to truly complete them, the way that they did with each other.

"Mommy?" A boy walked up to Mae, blue eyes, just like Link's, staring sadly at her. "You know, daddy never liked seeing his Angel cry."

Looking up, she found that her daughter was there too. She smiled for them, wiping off the tears on her face. Somehow, that nickname, the one he gave her, lightened her heart if only a little bit. "Lets go home…" she told them.

She turned around on more time, whispering a gentle 'i love you'. She knew he would always be there, whether or not she could see him. She knew she would always be his Angel, but now, he was her guardian angel too.
