she calls him seven times.

she leaves him six messages.

the first day of Spring Break:

the phone rings three times and then stops.

becs glows up at him from the screen.

he considers calling her back-
letting it ring three times-
just to let her know he cares-

but he doesn't touch the phone.

three days later, she calls.

the phone rings out.

she leaves a voicemail.

"Jess? It's me, Beca. I know you're angry, but please pick up the phone. I'm sorry. I..."

she disconnects or he ignores the rest of the message.

either way, neither of them really know what she's going to say.

his first day back at barden he goes out with benji for dinner.

he comes back - a voicemail from becs.

"Me again. Please call me back. Please."

that's it. seven words.

the third voicemail he receives at midnight on a wednesday.

"Jesse please pick up the phone. I'm sorry, please. I just...please."

she whispers the last word and he knows she's been crying.

"are you ever gonna call her back?" benji asks.

"nothing left to say." jesse responds, and that's that.

the next one, she's angry.

"Jesse Swanson answer this fucking phone right now or I swear to god-"

the call cuts out.

jesse doesn't sleep that whole night wondering what she was going to say.

he learns from eavesdropping on kimmy jen that beca screams in her sleep.

he goes back to the dorm and picks up the phone and is halfway through dialing the number when it rings.

he listens to her breathe, and then she whispers, "don't make me let go."

the last voicemail he receives is the longest yet.

he can tell she's been drinking just by the slur in her words.

"Hi Jesse. Guess who." she laughs emotionlessly. "you're not gonna call me back. who the fuck am i kidding. you hate me, i know you do.

You'll be proud of me, Jess. I watched 'The Breakfast Club' and sobbed like a little girl. You were right, endings are the best part. I miss movication. I miss seeing you at the station. I miss being around you and joking with you." she laughs again. "i miss juice pouches."

he deletes the message before he hears anything else that gives him reason to call her back.

she turns up at his door, beautiful as ever.

"i left you a bunch of messages." she says

"yeah, i got 'em." he replies coolly.

her eyes shine and he suddenly knows what she was on the verge of saying in the first voicemail.

he slams the door in her face and can almost hear himself break.

"i told you, endings are the best part."
