A/n: This was just a little thing that came to me as I was zoning out. So it doesn't really have a point except for people realizing things. If the plot of the story is similar to any others it is purely coincidental and accidental. Thanks.

Realizing

"""""""""""

Pain shot through his head. His eyes fluttered open and he sat up. Red orbs surveyed the area surrounding him. What happened? The young looking boy tried to recall his fleeting memories. They had had an assignment. The team had found the demons they were looking for. Yusuke and Kurama had chased down the larger part of the group while he and 'the oaf' stayed behind and finished off the smaller group. Then...

Hiei gasped. He remembered. The deadly blast of energy and the red haired idiot pushing Hiei aside. He figured he must have lost consciousness. The small demon turned his head this way and that, trying to find Kuwabara in the dark. Sharp eyes picked out a lump in the lasting shadows and he sprinted towards the figure.

Hiei could already tell that the human wasn't breathing. He lay face down in the bloodied mud, still as a statue. Hiei hesitated before he turned the body over. The crimson irises widened slightly at the sight of carnage in front of him. Most of the skin was burned and raw, and where it wasn't there was no skin at all. Laying by his sides, his hands were stripped clean of flesh and pristine white bone could be seen. Parts of bone had disintegrated and organs slightly protruded from his torso. Traveling up the human's body, Hiei discovered that the idiot's throat and lower jaw was all but missing. One could see where the spinal cord joined the base of the skull. Cartilage was all that remained of his nose, the skin being burned away. Black, smoking hair clung to his head.

The only thing that hadn't been harmed were his eyes. Dull, lifeless, brown eyes. Plain brown eyes. Nothing remotely spectacular about them. At least, not now anyways. Before, his eyes were always sparkling with a joy one could only find if they looked. Life and love had always resided in the swirling depths of the human's eyes. His eyes could have told his life story- the sorrow he had encountered, the rivalry, the friendship, the love, the belonging, and sometimes, even the hatred. Most definitely the hatred-but only for those who had deserved it. The men who had kidnapped Yukina, the Toguro brothers, Sensui. They had all deserved it.

He wasn't a saint- far from it. He had been unkind toward Hiei and others at one time or another. Not because he hated them. Just because he was human. Just because he was Kuwabara.

But, just because he was Kuwabara meant that Hiei would live. Just because he was Kuwabara meant that Hiei could try to live freely and have a life. Just because he was Kuwabara, Hiei could try to be happy. Just because he was Kuwabara, he wouldn't live.

Kuwabara might not have been a saint but he was Kuwabara. Hiei sighed. In a short time, he had come to realize something that he had not been able to see in the months he had spent with the human. And now he knew.

"Thank you...Kuwabara."

A/N: Okay. That was it. Some people may be wondering what Hiei came to realize.....well, you can think whatever you want. You can think that Hiei came to realize Kuwabara was only human, Kuwabara was Kuwabara's name (not baka or oaf), that Kuwabara was actually an alien from Mars....anything your heart desires. I would appreciate it if you would tell me what you think of this story. But, far be it from me to tell you what to do. So do what you want- review, read another story, rob a bank, or chase your sister or brother around with whipping cream. Again- do whatever you want. Thanks for reading!
