Providence of Burning Shadows
The Annual General Hospital Nurse's Ball was in full swing. I walked in and sat at a table in the corner of the room. I watched the attractive woman sing her soul out while theatrically dropping to her knees. I watched her intently, my eyes locked on hers.
"Hi," I heard a woman say as she and a tall man strolled up to the table. I sighed and shifted my attention to the pair and nodded, offering no words of greeting. "I'm Sam," the man to her left spoke up,"Name's Jason Morgan." Silence fell over us as the lady on stage finished her song.
I pointed at the woman as the curtain dropped, "Who's the song bird?" My eyes were focused. Sam lifted her eyebrows and sweetly replied, "Her name's Anna Devane." Jason instantly chimed in, "Who are you?" He narrowed his eyes as if he were scrutinizing me. "My name's Fearless. New to town," I cleared my throat, "I'd like a word with Ms. Devane if that can be arranged."Jason and Sam exchanged puzzled glances at me.
Without a word, Sam disappeared from sight. "Anna, do you have a minute?" she asked "Certainly Sam,"she replied though her smile became a worried frown instantly, "Why do you look so down?" Sam's eyes bulged briefly, "Well, there's this guy out there that says he wants to talk to you. Never seen him before." Anna's smile returned followed by a chuckle, "Really? Sounds like fun. Lead me to him."
When I laid eyes upon her again, the woman seemed more beautiful than I had thought. "Hello." I said meekly as I sheepishly held out my hand, "Fearless." I watched as the woman's features relaxed and her hand found mine, "Anna Devane," a few seconds past, "So... Fearless, pleased to meet you. Now what is it that you want to speak with me about?" Anna shown no apprehension and eased into the seat across from me.
"Well, Ms. Devane, lovely name by the way, I'm new to town and I saw you up on stage there and thought who better to show me around than the sultry singer?" My heart rate spiked the more I spoke. This only made Anna smile bigger, "I'd be delighted to show you around Fearless. That's an interesting name." I looked into her eyes. "Thank you Ms. Devane."
"Please call me Anna. Shall we?" she held out her hand. I took it as she led me out of the room. Jason and Sam waved at Anna and flashed me a thumbs up.
