Burn
Dad allows Dean to start on the grave, shows him how to make a rectangular outline in the sod. The work is heavy and Dean tires quickly so Dad takes over for the duration. Dean stands at the edge of the grave, hands clamped around the flashlight. The beads of sweat on Dad's forehead shine like crystals in the night.
The crunch of the shovel splintering the coffin's lid is loud in the silent cemetery. The stench hits Dean, who wrinkles his nose in disgust. Even Dad's face is grim as he climbs out of the hole, looks down upon a body which still has facial features visible. He sprinkles the salt and squirts the accelerant, swipes a match and tosses it into the grave.
Flames instantly leap high and Dean takes a step back. Dad's still, staring into the flames. Then Dean smells it; rotten flesh replaced by cooking meat. He almost gags, but he forces himself to mirror his father – he takes that step forwards, stares into the flames even though doing so makes his heart hammer.
In the morning Sammy's made toast for breakfast, but the smell of burning corpse lingers in Dean's nostrils; everything tastes burnt.
