A/N: I don't own Spider-Man, Peter Parker, or all of the other affiliated characters. All are the property of Stan Lee and Marvel.

Summary: Spider-Man/Peter Parker faces what he thinks is life after death. What others think is insanity. Please read for a deeper Spidey story. Movie-verse.

Trying, Dying

Is there more to life than this? I wonder about this question daily as I am faced with the evil eye of crime and the moral decadence of society here in this one little town called New York City.

No! How could there be? Fate destined me to be bitten by the spider, to become THIS, to do THAT. Innocent people need me to protect them from harm's way. I have that responsibility. I have that power.

Yes! What about me? Where does my personal life come in to play? The people and aspects of my life that I truly love were given up.sacrificed for this great cause. My future with MJ? It is gone like the dead whispers of the wind in the cold desert at night. My future with responsibility and duty slams me in the face with its power and hold over me.

Parker, why are you sitting here and crying? This is not you. Or is it?

"I've got to get to work."

I emblazon the bold spider on my chest and slip on the mask that disfigures my reality and ignites the flame of selfless responsibility.

Then I take the great leap out of the window, hoping that whatever criminal that I must stop next isn't the one. The one that ends all great leaps out of windows, that ends all crime fighting, that ends all sleepless nights thinking about this warped fate.
