THE TALE OF THE PROM TRAGEDY
DISCLAIMER
Loosely based on "The Tale of the Prom Queen", which belongs to Nickelodeon. Though the location is the same, this has a different ending.
This is a true story. It happened in the fifties, maybe '55, but no really knows for sure. It was Prom Night, the most romantic night of the year. It was a dark night filled with fog. The kind of fog where you can't see anything in front of you, not even your own hand. Sixteen-year old Sadie Mae Jennings was waiting for her boyfriend, sixteen-year old Johnny Larson right where they had agreed---outside the town's cemetery gates. Sadie Mae stood there, her dark hair flowing down her back. Her prom dress, a beautiful white gown, moved with the slight wind. She checked her watch.
"Come on, Johnny. Where are you?" she muttered. Suddenly, Sadie Mae saw headlights. Her heart leapt.
"Johnny?" she asked hopefully. Cautiously, she stepped forward. The driver never saw Sadie Mae in the fog. He only felt the impact as his car hit something. Grabbing a flashlight, he ran to the front of the car. Seeing Sadie Mae, he checked for a pulse. She just lay there motionless. The man ran off to find a phone to call for help. Meanwhile, Johnny had had car trouble, which was why he was late. He had finally managed to get his car, a Chevy, started. As he drove down the street, he wondered how he was going to explain to Sadie Mae why he was so late. As he reached the cemetery, he was surprised to see the flashing lights of a police car. Concerned, he stopped and asked what was going on. It was then that he learned that a girl had been hit. Johnny asked them to let him see the body. At first, the police denied his request, but he begged and begged them.
"Let me see her," he said. The police relented. When he saw the body, Johnny just went crazy. Before anyone could stop him, he ran back to his Chevy and drove into the fog. And they never saw him again.
