He Didn't Know Why

He didn't know why he agreed to be her fake date. He didn't know why he was sitting there in the booth with his arm around her shoulder. It wasn't even his holding arm! He didn't even know why he was enjoying himself so much, or why he wanted the 'date' to last forever and a day. But he did. And, of course, he didn't know why that jerk still had his phone.

He didn't know why he was so disappointed when that jerk wanted her back after not even five minutes into their fake date. He didn't know why his heart dropped to the floor. He didn't know why his heart was breaking, looking at her excited and happy face. But it was.

He didn't know why he wanted so badly to tell Chuckle One and Chuckle Two that they were on a real date. He didn't know why he was so sad when she confided in them that it was fake. Of course, he knew why it was a bad idea to tell them. But that didn't explain the rest. He didn't know why he wanted to smash their faces in when they told him that he wasn't worthy of the beautiful, funny and intelligent woman his arm was securely around. But he didn't.

He didn't know why his heart lifted when he lied and told the jerk that their date was genuine. He didn't know why he was being protective of her all of a sudden. She was a Random for crying out loud! He didn't know why he wanted them to be the only two people in the Arcade. He didn't know when he cared so much about someone other than himself. He didn't know why he was so happy that she kissed him. It was the highlight of his night!

He didn't know why he was ecstatic when she dumped the jerk. But he sort of knew why he wouldn't back the jerk up. And, of course, he got his phone back. He didn't know when he had been happier when the jerk tuck and rolled out of the Arcade. With any luck, they wouldn't ever meet again.

Then he realized that she hadn't really kissed him, and he was back to disappointment and wondering what it would really feel like to feel her gorgeous, pink lips on his. Not that he had thought about if before! Because that would be silly. And he was not silly. He was a very serious actor. Of course, he knew why he just had to tease her about 'kissing' him, though. Come on, like who would pass up on opportunity like that? And besides, she looked so cute when she was incredulous.

But he didn't know why he was so disappointed when she told him that she wouldn't kiss him. Because he knew he shouldn't care. He shouldn't! But he did. He cared a lot. Upon later reflection, the answer came to him.

Chad Dylan Cooper was in love with Sonny Munroe.

But he was.
