Meeting

EPOV

I am sitting in the cafeteria munching on my lunch. It's a ham and cheese sandwich my mum prepared, not much, but made with love. I was sometimes a bit jealous of the other kids with their 3 course meals with desserts and everything, but I know we don't have much and most of the time that's all right with me. I love my mum and we get on well, in the afternoon she brings me with her while she cleans houses and I just sit on a chair or a couch and read my current book. I never was really outgoing, but the whole "we don't have money so I can't go anywhere" thing didn't help with socialization either. It's ok though, I like being on my own, immersed in my books, the fantasy worlds where I can be anything and anyone. It is what I'm doing right now, filtering out the noise coming from all the kinds running around, laughing, eating, talking. Today the place seems even noisier, probably because of the new girls. I overheard some people saying that a new, rich family came to town, with 2 girls who are going to come to our school. Well, not that there are other options in a tiny town like Forks, but since usually there's not much change around here, this is pretty much front page news.

I pick up my apple and get up from my seat, turning around when I see that I'm going to bump into someone so I hastily take a step back, not noticing the other people behind me, and of course I trip, ending up sprawled on the floor with a tray on my face. Just breathe, that's all right, it happens sometimes, you should be used to it, no one even cares, I tell myself as I try to get my bearings, but then the tray lifts and I see huge brown eyes staring at me.

"I'm so sorry, I didn't see you there. Are you ok?" says the unidentified girl.

I don't have any words, kind of lost in the brown depth of her eyes and just stare at her.

"Maybe he has a concussion or something, should we call for the nurse?" she asks the blond next to her, and I notice that there are a bunch of people gathered around them, still talking.

"Ah, don't worry, that's just Cullen, he does this shit sometimes" I hear Mike Newton say, his eyes never leaving the brown-eyed girl.

"Are you sure?" she asks, more in my direction.

This wakes me up finally, because that's just what I want, to end up in the nurse's office because I stumbled and fell, drawing even more attention to myself. I start getting, pulling myself together, when I see an outreached hand in front of me, it belongs to the brown-eyed girl. By this time I'm way too embarrassed for spending this much time on the cafeteria floor for basically nothing, so I just pick my tray and bag up, mutter an apology and hightail out of there. I don't stop until I arrive to my next class, my favorite- English Lit- and plunge back into my novel, but even in my fantasy universe I can't stop imagining big brown orbs looking at me.
