Duck-Duck-Goose

It was a child's game, she knew. She remembered playing it with the other Rukongai children, screaming in delight, laughing in annoyance. Hitsugaya never played with her, saying it was childish. She knew it was, but she could never stop.

Entering the Academy, she taught it to Renji and Kira. Renji had been a street rat; games were too dangerous to play in the open. Kira was nobility, and hadn't many friends before aspiring to be a Shinigami. Neither cared for it much.

Even when she graduated, she played it, though only on rare occasion. She hated sitting still; she would shake with anticipation for when someone would rap her head lightly and screech "Goose!" She would chase them, and she had yet to find anyone she couldn't catch.

Until she met him.

They never played the game literally, but the figurative way they chased each other was very much like the child's game. No. He never chased her. Only her him. Chasing the dream that was outside her grasp.

Until she fell.

One day, she tripped. Bit the dust, and came to realize how exhausted she was. She lay there for a long time, not willing to move. When she lifted her head, she noticed he was gone. Nowhere to be found.

She got up.

She didn't have the will to run anymore though. Her prey had eluded her, escaped. She walked in aimless circles, until she noticed something.

Now she was being chased.

She had developed secrets. Fear of being alone was her greatest one. Fear of the silence. Fear of the dark. No one, not even the man, had known. People wanted to know now. Renji, Kira, Hitsugaya even, wanted to discover how she ticked.

She ran.

They must not discover her secrets. If they caught her, she'd have lost. She'd have to sit out and watch. She hated sitting. She felt left out then, alone. She didn't like being alone.

And so she ran.

Faster and faster, continuing her life's game, hoping nobody catches up to her.
