Prologue

It was three weeks before the party and there were many things to do. There was a great deal

of excitement and stress. So many things to prepare, yet so many things to wait for in an

anxious manner. Linnia Rundleman was not thinking about the party. Her every thought was

upon her husband, Naoffin. He was very ill, although his heart kept its pure spirit. He was dying.

"Linnia, my dear," He whispered with a weak breath, "do not cry." She had knelt by his bedside

crying. He extended one hand to her face and lifted her chin up. She covered her hands over

his. "What shall we do without you?" She said in an angst-filled voice. He smiled at her.

"Without me? My dear, you will never be without me. No matter what darkness comes over

you, no matter what trial you face, no matter how far you from home, I am always with you."

He reached his other hand over to her right cheek. They sat in silence for a moment. "I love

you." Naoffin grew very pale in his face and his eyes grew shallow. "Naoffin?" Linnia looked up

quickly. Naomi sat next to her two younger brothers, Nolin and Laisene. "Don't eat all the

sausage, Nolin! Save some for Papa when he is ready to eat!" Laisene said as he grabbed the

sausage plate and put it at the head of the dining table. "Do you think Papa will be better soon,

Naomi?" Nolin asked, gobbling up a whole sausage. ~ "Naoffin?" "Sing with me, Linnia."

"What?" "Sing with me the tale of Tinuviel." She began singing with him in a hushed voice.

"The leaves were long, the grass was green,

The hemlock-umbels tall and fair,

And in the glade light was seen

Of stars in shadow shimmering.

Tinuviel was dancing there

To music of a pipe unseen,

And light of stars was in her hair,

And in her raiment glimmering."

His voice was fading. Her voice was in despair. She watched him smile and his warm eyes

become empty.

"There Beren came from mountains cold,

And lost he wandered under leaves,

And where the Elven-river rolled

He walked-"

His hands fell from her face as she grasped them harder. "Naoffin?" She could only feel

utter despair, utter sorrow, as if she was alone, and completely lost. "Naoffin?!"

She shook him. "No! You cannot leave me!" Linnia screamed. Naomi looked back to the

hallway. The boys were silent. A great deal of horror overcame then and they ran for the

bedroom. "Mama?" Laisene said and he walked over slowly, with Nolin following close behind.

When Naomi looked upon her father, she could not cry. She was too overwhelmed with sudden

grief to even conceive the thought of her father dead. "Papa?" She croaked.

Her mother's head was upon her father's chest, weeping. "Papa?" She said over and over again

in her mind as it echoed through her heart. He was gone.
