The Walk
The late, Autumn afternoon breeze blew through her golden hair, sending it into a wind trailing behind her. Astrid Ellison was on her way home, strolling down Golding Street, nearing the small neighbourhood she called home. Behind her, a boy trailed in awe, little to her knowledge.
Sam Temple was just about walking. Weak at the knees, and knocked of breath by her. It was like he had died, and was knocking at Heaven's door to be let in. And she was the glorious angel that would open the door for him. But deep down, in the very pit of his being, he knew she would never be interested in a guy like him. Astrid the Genius would never in a million years go for Schoolbus Sam, or Surfer Sam. It was nonsensical. Ludicrous. A vision of his mind that made his dreams send him into both joy and sorrow upon waking from them.
She wandered about a hundred feet ahead of him. Her shiny, smart pumps? Flats? Was that what girls called them? Sam thought to himself, treaded hurriedly in front of him. Suddenly, smack! The temptation to run up and lift up her AP math book off the shabby, grey concrete screamed at him. Now would be the perfect chance to ask her out to a movie he thought silently, willing her to turn and notice him for once in her life.
But she beat him to it. Bending down and gently scooping the book into the crook of her bare arm, Sam was breathless. Her tight, white washed jeans fit her perfectly, and the baby blue short-sleeved blouse made her glow in the afternoon Californian sun.
He continued trailing behind her like a lost puppy, following its owner home for a treat or a sign of love and affection.
So lost in thought, Sam didn't notice the small twig in his path behind the blonde beauty, until it snapped in half beneath his sneakers.
Silently cursing himself for his distraction, Sam panicked. Seeing no other possible option without being both embarrassed and interrogated by his childhood crush, his eyes caught sight of a concealment.
Before realizing what he was doing, Sam leapt over one of her neighbours white picket fences and landed right in the evergreen bush surrounding the fence. A whirlwind of small, dark green leaves flew into the air in such a comedic fashion Sam had to stifle a laugh at the irony of the situation. Guy follows crush home and jumps into neighbours bush to hide, he thought. He quietly burst out laughing, but soon forced himself to stop.
Great, Sam thought, she thinks I'm a stalker as well as a lunatic. Peeping out through the green jungle that saved him, Sam noticed she was gone. Being both glum and relieved at her choice to walk away, he clumsily clambered out of the shrub in pain. Thorns jutted out from his finely toned arms and legs. Beginning his journey to the beach limping slightly, he thought about today's events.
His day had started off as great. He'd had a great morning. Up until lunch, when Quinn had dared him ten bucks to ask Astrid out, Sam had been stress free. Then, he began to fret. And then, that walk had happened and following that, here he was. Walking to the beach in shame, and pain.
Oh well, at least his love for surfing was endless.
