AN: So, this is just a quick one shot. I thought of this while I was listening to a sad-ish song yesterday. I don't like to write or read sad stories but it was just sitting in my head and I had to write it down. I hope you like it.
Disclaimer: I don't own NCIS. Sorry. Yeah, I know. Not cool.
June 19th. To anyone else, it was an average day, but to Abby Scuito, it was not. She woke up early, around 5:30am and put on the black dress that sat in the back of her closet for so many years. She pulled her hair into two low pigtails and slowly applied her dark makeup.
Walking into her kitchen, she grabbed the tan picnic basket and filled it with everything that she needed. She walked to the front door and slid on her black platform boots and grabbed her keys. As she drove to her destination, she sat in complete silence. Music wasn't needed or wanted on a day like today. She pulled up along the sidewalk and parked the car.
Abby made her way down the long row of headstones until she found what she was looking for. She knelt on the ground in front of it and began to empty the contents of her basket. She spread out a large red picnic blanket and placed to white china plates on the blanket, one in front of herself and one in front of the headstone. She placed a fork next to each plate and pulled out a plastic container. She slowly removed the lid to reveal its contents. She removed two slices of cake and carefully laid one on each plate.
Abby looked up to see the sun beginning to rise. "Look Kate, you always loved sunrise. You told me that once." She said, forcing a smile. "I brought you some birthday cake. It's chocolate, your favorite. You would have been 38 today." Abby whispered.
She reached back into the basket and pulled out a candle and a small lighter. She carefully put the candle in the cake nearest the headstone and lit the candle. "Make a wish." She whispered. A light breeze blew and the flame vanished. "I hope that was you, Kate. I really miss you. I mean, I love Ziva, I think you would have liked her, but you. You're different. I want to hug you one last time. I didn't even get to say good-bye." Abby sobbed.
Her tears began to slow down and finally stop as she gathered her things and returned them to the picnic basket. She reached into the basket one last time to reveal a lone white daisy. She walked over and carefully positioned it at the bottom of the headstone.
Abby leaned over and softly kissed her friend's gravestone. "Happy Birthday, Kate." She whispered. She turned to walk away when a small piece of white notebook paper caught her eye. She bent down to pick it up from where it was positioned at the base of her foot. A lone tear rolled down her cheek as she read the note. I miss you Abbs. She read. "I miss you, too, Kate." She whispered.
So, how was it? Was it awful? Was it ok? Did it make you cry? If it made you cry, I'm sorry. Crying usually ruins my day so, sorry if it made you cry. Don't worry. My other stories that I write are much happier. Let me know what you thought. Check out my other story "One and the Same" for some Tiva and happiness!
