Mummy says…

Mummy had told him never to talk to strangers. She had told him to leave them alone and if they spoke to him to nod politely and walk away. Mummy had told him not to talk to strangers.

But…

The little boy looked so lonely, sat there on the bench, black curls falling in his face. Scuffing his shoes against the tarmac, John wondered if he should go talk to him. The park was busy today, Mummy talking to another lady and lots of other children running around the play area. But that little boy wasn't sat in play area. Kicking his feet and looking at his hands, the curly-haired boy sat aside. Then again, John reasoned with himself, Mummy had said that he had to be nice and friendly to everyone. So, John Watson let go of the pram and slipped away from his Mummy, going to sit beside the lonely boy.

"Hello?" he ventured quietly.

"My Mummy says I'm not supposed to talk to strangers," mumbled the other boy, not looking up.

"My Mummy says that too. But you looked lonely."

"Not lonely, just…"

"I can be your friend if you want?" asked John, frowning a little when the other trailed off. There was a long pause before he replied,

"I would like that. What is your name?"

"John!" said John, proudly. "John Hamish Watson. What's yours?" The dark-haired boy raised his head to gaze at John with curious grey-blue eyes.

"It's Sherlock. Sherlock Holmes." Both boys were quiet for a long time before John said,

"I like that name. It's different. Sherlock." Sherlock smiled widely.

"Really?"

"Really really!" They giggled and stood up.

"What shall we play?" asked John.

"Let's play pirates! I'll be the captain and you can be my first mate!" And with that, both boys tore off towards the slide to set up a ship from which to have many adventures.
