Sora stood across from Riku, Keyblade in hand. He didn't want to fight him. Riku had his weapon pointed in Sora's direction, ready for battle. The two of them stood there like that for a few moments, neither one wanting to make the first move.
"Riku! I don't want to fight you!" Sora yelled in an attempt to avoid the inevitable fight. He'd come all this way, and now his only choice was to fight the person he had worked so hard to find. Why couldn't Riku just come with him until they found Kairi, and the three of them just go home together?
Riku was silent. He didn't say a word. Sora wondered how he could get through to him. He didn't know if he'd be able to fight.
"Riku!"he called again, his voice desperate. Finally he spoke.
"What do you want, Sora." Riku replied, his eyes almost void of emotion.
"You really don't want to fight me, do you?" Sora pleaded.
Riku's eyes narrowed.
"I have no choice now," he tried to hide it, but there was a tinge of sadness in his voice.
"Yes you do, Riku. Come with me! We can save Kairi together."
"No, Sora. This is how things are now. I've sided with the darkness. You hold the key to the door of light." Riku gestured with his weapon, arm outstretched.
"But..." his voice wavered, and he dropped to his knees. He wasn't going to fight Riku, he couldn't – he ... Sora didn't know what to do. It didn't seem like Riku was going to back down. Why? "Why do things have to be like this!"
Riku paused for a long while and finally said, almost to himself, "... I don't know." His arm dropped to his side. He didn't want to fight Sora any more than Sora wanted to fight him.
"Maybe, things could have turned out differently." Riku whispered to himself. "Somehow, maybe we wouldn't be separated like this." Sora looked up at him. "But this is how things are, we can't just go back to how it was before."
Sora slowly stood up. He thought that maybe he understood what Riku was saying. Maybe even though neither of them wanted it, this fight had to take place. Because of all the things that had happened they had ended up on different sides.
"Alright, but as soon as this is over, you're coming back to the islands with Kairi and me!" Sora declared as he picked up his Keyblade. em Maybe, there is a way to go back to how things are. /em
"Not if I get to her first!" Riku took a step back. Both of them were in a fighting stance. Riku was the one who made the first move. Sora dodged and tried to retaliate from the side.
em After this... we're going home. /em
