This is intended to be a one shot but I could potentially write more if you guys like it! Let me know what you think!

Matt grabs my arm, pulling me back around as I head for the door. "Are you sure you want to keep doing this?"

I raise an eyebrow at him. "What do you mean?"

"All of it. Catching Kira, working with the mafia, trying to best everyone. Are you sure you should keep doing this?" His worried green eyes meet mine.

Leaning back against the wall, I cross my arms. "I wouldn't be doing it if I wasn't certain. I have to do this."

Matt runs a hand nervously through his messy hair, shifting the goggles over a bit. "Mels… how far are you willing to go for this? How much do you want risk to reach your goals?"

My gaze softens as I realize he's worried about me. "I'll go as far as I need to. I've put it all on the line before, I'll do it again." I absentmindedly touch the scar tissue on my face.

"I know you would, but do you need to?" Matt fidgets with the hem of his vest. "You don't have to have some superhuman gift to be important. I mean, I'm not looking to be with a superhero, Mello."

This catches me off-guard, and I pause for a moment, not knowing how to reply.

He steps closer to me. "I know we haven't been together for that long and that… that the mission come first for you. But, for whatever it's worth, I think things are fine the way they are. Life doesn't have to be some fairy tale where you win, and everything is bliss. Honestly, I just want you to be there. I want you alive, so that I have someone to turn to. And damn it, I need you here so I can kiss you."

My breath catches in my throat as I look at his face, full of vulnerability and waiting for my reply. I drop my eyes to the floor, knowing I'm going to disappoint him. "You might not need the best, but I do."

"What? What do you mean? Am I not… enough for you?" His voice falls low, and he moves back. "God… I'm so stupid… I thought…"

I grab his wrist and pull him back. "No. No, I'm not enough for me. I have to do this, I have to become number one. It's…" My voice starts to break, and I pull in a deep breath to stabilize it. "I have one goal, and I have to reach it or die trying. I want you at my side for it Matt, but I also understand if you can't be."

He frowns, and his eyebrows furrow together beneath his unruly red bangs. "Without question, I'm with you. But… how am I supposed to just be okay, when every time you go out that door I don't know if you're going to come back though it?"

After a moment, I let out a slow breath and reply, "I don't exactly have an answer for that. All I know is that… I'll love you until you lose me."

A shaky smile appears on Matt's face. "And I… uh… in case something happens to me first, then I'll love you until you lose me as well."

I nod and then slide my hand around his neck and draw him into a slow, deep kiss. "As long as you mean that, then the amount of time we have together doesn't matter."

I was inspired to write this by "Something Just Like This" By The Chainsmokers and Coldplay; so if you'd like additional feels, I recommend listening to that! This will be the first of many song inspired one shots!
