Author's Note: Hello! I've had this fanfic sitting around in my files for about a year now, but never quite had the time to keep working on it until recently. This fic will be multi-chapter (probably around 3?) and will be full of angst, angst and more angst. If you're a Swen shipper like me, I do hope that I did the characters of Emma and Regina justice. Enjoy!

Disclaimer: I don't own OUAT or any of the characters. If I did, Emma and Regina would have gotten together in the finale, kissed and had magic babies.

It was just a kiss.

One.

That's what Emma Swan told herself as she magicked herself away from Regina and her dumbfounded expression.

What the hell did she do?

They usually had dinner on Fridays, along with Henry. And then they had those late night heart-to-heart talks while Henry was asleep. Then sometimes, Emma and Regina would fall asleep in each other's arms, then would untangle themselves away from each other before Henry wakes.

It was always about Henry- neither were willing to admit that they were, in fact, falling into a familiar routine with each other. And truth be told, Emma spent more time with Regina, her friend, rather than with Killian, her fiance.

Even the whole town of Storybrooke knew that what Emma and Regina shared was special.

Emma tried to stop thinking about Regina. Of all the things she could've royally messed up, it had to be officially ruining her friendship with the former Evil Queen. And speaking of queens, Regina truly was the epitome of regality, with the way she seemed to command the entire population of Storybrooke with that husky, hypnotic voice, putting everyone into a trance (especially Emma). Even the way those dark brown eyes flashed dangerously when challenged had Emma's insides tied in knots.

But Emma's biggest weakness was Regina's smile. The way scarlet painted lips formed into a wide grin at the mention of Henry had Emma's heart fluttering wildly in her chest.

'God, the woman is beautiful', Emma thought helplessly as she appeared in a cloud of white smoke, having poofed herself into her living room.

Regina Mills was driving her crazy. Emma often found that her fantasies involved Regina- of how those sinfully red lips would capture hers in a searing kiss, then a throaty laugh would follow afterwards- and then Emma would smirk playfully, not giving a damn that lipstick had gotten all over her swollen lips. Other fantasies involved flashes of hand holding, onyx eyes locking onto Emma's jade green ones, and whispers of 'I love you' being exchanged-

Emma shook her head. She shouldn't be thinking of Regina like that. It's how she should be thinking of Killian- and oh god, Emma remembered that she was going to marry him tomorrow.

She closed her eyes and thought of her fiance. He was handsome- he had ocean blue eyes, but she found them too icy, and much preferred to look at warm, dark brown eyes, since they provided her with great comfort. When she kisses him, his lips are rough and often dominate her- Emma often imagines kissing sinfully red lips instead when kissing Killian. Whenever she looked at her engagement ring, it seemed to glare at her, as if mocking her that she would live a life of unfulfilled dreams and entrapment.

She didn't want to go through with her wedding, but everyone had been planning it for weeks now- and she couldn't stop thinking about beautiful Regina.

Regina, the queen of her heart.

A sob escaped Emma. Why didn't she just tell Regina how she felt right from the start? Why did she have to bottle it all up until it exploded?

A puff of purple smoke suddenly appeared before Emma. 'Oh no,' Emma thought. Her heart starting beating erratically. Regina materialized before her. She had an unreadable expression on her face, which made Emma nervous.

"Regina, I am so sorry," Emma began shakily. "I never should have-"

But before Emma could finish her sentence, Regina's lips were on hers. They were so soft, so supple. Emma moaned- and as she did, she felt Regina's tongue dancing with her own. Her head was spinning. Regina Mills was kissing her. She was under a trance, and didn't realize that Regina had pinned her back to the wall. Emma winced slightly at the pain, but she kept kissing Regina, whose hands were roaming freely around her breasts.

"Oh, god, Regina," Emma moaned.

Regina was attacking Emma's neck with a sucking motion, yet those tender lips were soothing her simultaneously. It was going to leave a mark, Emma realized. And so, she gently pushed Regina off her body.

"Killian's gonna see the bruises," Emma managed to get out. Regina immediately stopped.

"Emma…" Regina gasped. Her eyes, which darkened with lust, were now fearful, afraid of rejection. "Why did you kiss me earlier?"

She was at a loss of words. "I'm sorry," was all she could muster. She really was speechless around Regina.

"Are you really?" asked Regina. There was a hint of bitterness in her voice. Her brown eyes were piercing through Emma's, daring her to lie.

"I don't know," Emma replied shakily. Regina's eyes flashed with pain. "I mean, I'm getting married to him tomorrow, Regina, and god, all I can think of is you."

For a moment, there was silence.

Both were trying to take in the events that just occurred between them. There was no doubt that their friendship was now officially ruined. But now that Emma thought about whatever she had with Regina, it was never just a friendship. There was something more to it. They were connected together somehow- was it fate?

"You never told me."

Regina's voice cut through the awkward silence between them. Emma didn't know what to say.

"For years, I've wanted you, Emma Swan," the dark haired brunette continued shakily. "I knew it from the moment we saved Henry in Neverland, I realized that I need you." She clasped her hands with Emma's.

"Tell me you feel this connection too," she pleaded. "Otherwise, you wouldn't have kissed me." Her eyes were begging with Emma to choose her, for the two of them to make their own destiny.

"Emma, I can't live without you," Regina admitted softly.

Emma smiled sadly. "We can't, Regina." She unclasped their hands.

"I love you," Regina blurted out in desperation. "I've loved you for years." Her eyes were still pleading, but now, they were glistening with tears.

Emma shook her head. "I'm getting married tomo-"

"To hell with the pirate," Regina growled. "You still have a choice."

She was right- she still had a choice. She had feelings for Regina, and maybe she was even in love with her- but she's getting married tomorrow. And everyone was already so invested in the wedding that she couldn't bring herself to walk away and follow her heart.

And so, with a sorrowful look in her eyes, Emma whispered, "I'm sorry, Regina."

She was making the right choice, she convinced herself. Her feelings for Regina would eventually disappear, and everything would go back to normal. They would go back to their playful banters, making magic to protect the town, sharing Henry-

The light in Regina's eyes seemed to die out, and instead looked empty. She suddenly smiled at Emma, and with a broken smile, replied, "I see."

Emma thought she heard a strangled sob before Regina disappeared in a cloud of purple smoke.
