Summary: An AU's unheard of end. A goodbye. One-shot. Brief.
An End Unheard
The countdown had begun but she just stared at the device, uncomprehending. Around her, her team did the same. On the Atlantean screen she could see the horrified, surprised look coming from the SGC commander and the flag team surrounding him. She slowly put down the crude tool she had been forced to use in attempting to stop the device. There no point trying to stop it now, they were finished.
"Is it...?" A young sergeant recently transferred here asked.
"I'm so sorry..." Keller whispered, still in shock. "I couldn't stop it."
They were to go together, Atlantis, the last of the ancients, the SGC and Earth, and the fifth race. More humans would survive, and even a glimpse of both races lived on, drifting farther and farther from this cold reality.
She looked down at the open body in front of her, an alien device firmly implanted where the heart should have been.
"I'm sorry..." She whispered as the white light filled the room, and then went further, stretching across the sea and out into space. And then it went through the rings, all the way back home, and the way back to the world that was supposed to last forever, the heart of the galaxy, kingdom of peace...
A scientist in Area 51 glanced at the mirror across from his desk. Another mirror had been destroyed, in some other reality. He smiled and looked back down at his work. His heart beat faster and a strange light entered his eyes as he promised himself, he would not let his own reality suffer the same fate...
