There is a girl, deep in the heart of Baltimore, who is quiet different then the conventional teenager. Her looks are odd and too roundish, nothing like the view of beauty; thin and harsh. And she is too opinionated, an outcast in this close-minded society. This girl, Tracy Turnblad, is very much different than the average person. A trait that she has learned to love despite the thoughts of other people.
Tracy, young as she is, has always been critiqued because of her weight. Judged because of her appearance and put down because of the way she acts. All of this is pressed heavily upon her, and is it no surprise that she is left hidden within the shadows, forgotten. With no help from her mother, who rather keep Tracy locked up at home then face the world, Tracy is often left alone dreaming for something. For something more.
Like a child, she dreams of fame, for recognition.
But most of all, she dreams of love.
